Been a bit worried since I heard the "moderates" kneecapped Milne on petrol excise indexation. Di Natale is a serious worry for me, I never voted Democrat and won't start now. I think politics has never been more interesting at the moment and we may be witnessing a big cultural shift worldwide.
Looking at what is happening with Trump for example and there appears to be groundswell starting to voice their displeasure at the control the chattering classes have had over them for the past 2 decades. Regular people are sick of being told how to think and are now going to politicians demanding to know what is in it for them.
This will manifest itself in Australia as well and I predict the Australian Liberty Alliance will do very, very well at the next election. Of course, the political media and commentariat will be shocked and surprised when this happens because they have been too busy naval gazing about SSM and transgender rights and all the other crap.
I think Turnbull will fall over the line at the next election (more an indictment on Shorten and Plibersek than anything else) but he will be heavily reliant on preferences from the Nats and the ALA. They will put the squeeze on Turnbull to start focusing on mainstream issues and Iâm not sure Turnbull is capable of going against his roots. That could potentially open up the Liberal leadership again.

The left side of politics is wary of the cops for some very sound historical reasons. Plenty of people remember the Queensland cops cheerfully playing the role of Johs personal brownshirts for decades while he turned the state into a one-party kleptocracy (for which very very few were ever held accountable, even post-Fitzgerald), and the extreme enthusiasm that various police forces and security services showed for infiltrating, for example, environmental groups vs their seeming utter inability to bother organised crime in any meaningful way.

The great depression had a zillion causes (leftover WWI debt, the default of Germany on war reparation payments, currencies locked to the gold standard, lack of any meaningful stockmarket regulation in the US in particular) but tariffs wasnât really a major one in the greater scheme of things.
Not sure currencies locked to the gold standard was a bad thing. They are now fiat currencies locked to precisely nothing except the us $ which rises and falls on the actions of the fed reserve which is a private bank with rather nebulous ownership.

If your currency is locked to the gold standard, the amount of cash money you can print is limited to the amount of gold that people have physically dug out of the ground, according to whatever your locked exchange rate is (and back in the 20s, it was a matter of national pride that you ALWAYS kept your currency strong and never devalued it). But then you canât choose to print more paper money to devaluate your currency in hard times in order to give your exports a boost and make it easier to keep servicing your debt. When you canât boost your economy by exporting more or spending less on debt - youâre pretty much stuck in a vicious circle of stagnation. The economy contracts, so you have to spend more of your GDP servicing debt, so you have less money for productive investment, so the economy contracts. You lose a tool with which to keep the real economy (of people making and doing stuff, getting paid for it, and using that pay to buy stuff - all of which is a hundred times ârealerâ than any amount of yellow metal stashed in a vault somewhere) running.
Iâm hugely oversimplifying of course, and Iâm hardly an expert on this stuff to start with. When I get home Iâll link to a book that covers this stuff really well.

If you print too much money then the currency plummets in value. Everyoneâs savings are suddenly worth nothing, prices skyrocket (and wages basically never keep up) and your hungry fellow citizens, whoâve seen their life savings become worthless and are now paying a monthâs salary for a sandwich, hang you from the nearest convenient street lamp.
If you contract the money supply too much, then you get stuck in the cycle of stagnation I talked about above. The economy tanks, investment grinds to a halt, and unemployment goes through the roof.
And now Trump is keen to learn about the economic impact of a high dollar and low dollar while he bangs on about currency manipulation in other countries.
