Politics

Antibiotic resistant bacteria will inherit the earth.

You don’t get much meeker than that.

Really? I reckon antibiotic resistant bacteria think themselves pretty clever actually. Sitting there with all their special resistance powers that have been gifted to them.

And another thing, I bet they don’t appreciate it!

Not wanting to be a ■■■■, but I will be, a few times... Would have thought Africa (and by that I don't think you mean J-Berg to Cairo) is an example of the resilience of human life rather than the frailty of it. And if you think bugs are going to knock us off, I give you the Ganges.

Well that will depend on the amount of money there is spent on research

Was it research that stopped Ebola, or centuries old quarantine methods?

Don't blame global warming on AC, electronics and cars on the road.

There’s waaaay too many people on the planet.

Sure if we all lived like Indian villagers the globe could support us.

It’s humans that’ll end up killing us, if a giant meteorite doesn’t first.

It’ll be disease that kills us. With the earth heating up, crop soil will dry up, fresh drinking water will be scarcer and mosquito/other born diseases will flourish. Only need to look at Africa over the past decades to see a sample of what to expect.

But have you seen the new iphone?!

Yep.

The planet will be fine once we’re gone.

And now Benfti, your illustrious Greens Leader DiNatale , has offered a Greens coalition with Liberals. Reckon the Nats will love that !

He is one of them deep down so not surprising

who else were the red-necks going to vote for before the dog whistle?

Yep. I tried to start a campaign when we were at 6.9 billion, saying 7 is a lucky number, that’ll do us thanks, but it didn’t take off.

Probably should have had a ■■■■■■ hashtag. I was unaware of twitting.

#7BillionsEnough!

You guys and girls misunderstand Bacchus - Politics is important but runs a distant second to the fairer sex.

Are you suggesting he changes wives as often as the ALP changes leader

You did suggest the Parties were too close to be seperate do, which is just wrong.

Why largesse ?

You show your colours with your comments. Medicare, Gonski, NDIS are all very affordable if everyone paid their farking tax. And funding private schools is a real disgrace.

We could kill everyone at 65, which would solve your issues.

Not to mention the billions handed straight to coal miners that would rival some of the larger social and health budgets. It’s so obviously skewed by lobbying. Iron ore is our biggest mineral export and it doesn’t even get the government assistance coal does. Mining is a stupid thing to give huge grants to. It’s the last thing you’d logically subsidise. They are always going to dig the stuff up in same places anyway and it has been incredibly profitable without huge grants and the myriad of assistances they’ve gotten. So there’s a largess we can talk about that does absolutely nothing to help anyone except mine owners. Heck, you could use it to wipe out the deficit that everyone is so terrified of if you liked. Oh, I guess that’s not as important as they say it is. After all, they wouldn’t have thrown billions at miners already raking in billions in profit if that was case would they? Yep, let’s take it off the weak, sick and infirm that are already in various states of vulnerability.

Dutton is a fcukwit. Pure & simple.

Most of the current set of Liberals are for some reason.

Dutton is a fcukwit. Pure & simple.

Just saw Dutton go full racist on Sky with a they will take our jobs spiel.

Stay classy

Here is the ultimate retort.

Isn't putting up tarrifs on everything the main cause of the Great Depression? Country A did it, so countries B through Z followed suit.

Nope. The great depression had a zillion causes (leftover WWI debt, the default of Germany on war reparation payments, currencies locked to the gold standard, lack of any meaningful stockmarket regulation in the US in particular) but tariffs wasn’t really a major one in the greater scheme of things.

Not sure currencies locked to the gold standard was a bad thing. They are now fiat currencies locked to precisely nothing except the us $ which rises and falls on the actions of the fed reserve which is a private bank with rather nebulous ownership.
I think I’d rather be tied to a gold standard. At least then there was something underpinning the paper.

The problem with the gold standard is that it IS a solid tangible thing underpinning the paper. The solid tangible thing is, in this case, a big golden millstone around the neck.

If your currency is locked to the gold standard, the amount of cash money you can print is limited to the amount of gold that people have physically dug out of the ground, according to whatever your locked exchange rate is (and back in the 20s, it was a matter of national pride that you ALWAYS kept your currency strong and never devalued it). But then you can’t choose to print more paper money to devaluate your currency in hard times in order to give your exports a boost and make it easier to keep servicing your debt. When you can’t boost your economy by exporting more or spending less on debt - you’re pretty much stuck in a vicious circle of stagnation. The economy contracts, so you have to spend more of your GDP servicing debt, so you have less money for productive investment, so the economy contracts. You lose a tool with which to keep the real economy (of people making and doing stuff, getting paid for it, and using that pay to buy stuff - all of which is a hundred times ‘realer’ than any amount of yellow metal stashed in a vault somewhere) running.

I’m hugely oversimplifying of course, and I’m hardly an expert on this stuff to start with. When I get home I’ll link to a book that covers this stuff really well.

Yes but when it is not locked to the gold standard you can do anything you like with no restrictions.

Just as part of the greening discussion saw this news. Heading in the right direction:

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2016-05-18/university-of-nsw-engineers-set-solar-energy-world-record/7423762

As these breakthroughs eventually become cost effective to mass produce (usually a window of 10-20 years) and things become more efficient, batteries get better, it will become feasible to run your home off of a few well placed panels. Battery banks will fill the needs of industry, supplied from solar plants, possibly on premises. Electricity will cost what it costs to install and maintain the hardware. It’s not too far away.

If only there were a way to do the same to the same degree with water.
