Even though there is more stuff, it is on average, not using anymore watts, than a CRT TV, VCR, fridge washer, stereo, etc would use on a daily basis in the 80âs. For example, for what would run a single cathode TV, would run up to 4 very large LED flat screens, and you could run 3 fridges today for the watts one large one would use back then.
By far & away, the biggest cause for the increase is the RC Air Cons.

Yeah I agree about aircons, it is the lions share (they have improved as well, just not enough). However people have multiples of all the other things now, something they did not have 20 years ago which is also creating some of the problem.
Not to mention the loss of electricity use for dwindling manufacturing, we donât smelt at portland anymore, for instance, and highrises have on average reduced usage by 35%, some up to 50% with more efficient lighting etc, (as we have at home with flouro bulbs), and a new high rise today will use about 25% - 40% per squ meter of itâs 1980âs equivalent.

Power use has gone up not just by population growth but astronomically per capita as well, ⌠over 100% in the past twenty years, the chief reason being that every suburban McMansion has not just one, but several Air Conditioners in it.
To me, there is a very simple thing they could legislate.
This has been a bug bear of mine for years now, simply because of the fact that the upgrade of poles & wires they bang on about, which has been the almost sole reason behind the skyrocketing Electricity prices, is only necessary, for peak load times,⌠around 2% of the time, and those peak load times are on hot days, when everyone turns the AC on at full tilt.
The simple thing??
Considering that when that peak use occurs when the sun is shining itâs hardest, they should legislate, that people installing the AC units must match whatever Kilowattage worth that they install, with an equivalent amount of KWâs in solar panels.
If they had done this, even fully subsidised, or paid off through power bills, they would reduce peak load & greenhouse gas emissions, and eliminated the need for massive upgrades to the network, which we all pay through the nose for, so for just a few days a year, people donât sweat a bit.
Itâs all so â â â â â â stupid.
Various education, advertising etc campaigns trying to coax people into using less energy have been around my entire adult life. Remember the black balloons? If it was going to work, it would have worked by now.
Itâs too late for that and the magnitude of the change needed is too great. Major structural change is needed to gut the use of coal as an energy source, put a hard stop on land clearing, and clamp down on vehicle emissions - and none of that can be done without coordinated, coercive govt action that directly impacts hip pockets. There might have been time for a more nuanced and gradual approach 15 years back, but from an AGW point of view we cannot get back the time that Howard and George W â â â â â â up against the wall. The longer the illness is left untreated the harsher the medicine has to be.

Seems to me Benfti that most of us accept the effects of climate change and its dire consequences. However telling me that global temperatures are rising by a degree or two has no meaning, as the temperature goes up and down every day, so we find it hard to relate.
A program of support for energy savings makes more sense. Free pink batts was good, so would solar panels and batteries, and more other renewal sources. Just getting people to not use so much air conditioning and turn off lights. And how about playing footy in the farking daylight, out in the open.
All of us need to take responsibility and Government needs to act directly, not leaving it to capitalist private industry to make great profit out of these necessary actions. OK to blame us for screwing the planet, but we are driven by those with the profit motive to use more and more energy every day.
