A rival is someone you give grudging respect to. It's possible to say 'well played' about them and mean it.Relevant.
Collingwood, Hawthorn, and to a lesser extent Richmond and North.
Carlton and St Kilda are sht irrelevant clubs that do not, have not and will not ever get respect from me.
Everyone else is somewhere in the middle, exact location depending on recent results.
Carlton
Andrew Demetriou
Some other teams
Oops, it was umpire Crapp, not Crapper. Crap.
A rival is someone you give grudging respect to. It's possible to say 'well played' about them and mean it. So the biggest rivals are Hawthorn and North, although North's is probably trading on the 90s a little too heavily (but then we may be too).I hate Carlton.
I hate a certain opinion writer, venomous spiders, infected wounds and human traffic as well, but we don’t have a rivalry.Collingwood are probably somewhere in between those two.
Mods please sticky this as the first post in every thread.
Oops, it was umpire Crapp, not Crapper. Crap.Ivo Crapp.....has there ever been a more apt name for an umpire?
This is a tricky question. I generally hate teams that are performing well e.g. Hawthorn. The fact that Carlton as a basket case and I still hate them with a passion means that they are the ones that we have the biggest rivalry with…the pies are right up there with them.
As I am a major over-achiever, I also hate the saints and dogs because they are pathetic!
I think there is a big difference between who the supporters believe is a big rivalry, and who the players think is the biggest rivalry. (Ie. Who they want to belt behind play)
The supporters have built a hatred of teams over many era’s. The players are told by people inside the club and the supporters that ‘we hate Carlton’, So the expectation is high.
The players are the ones on the ground. They know which teams act like c*nts.
I think the EFC players see St. Kilda and North Melbourne as big rivals. You can tell by the amount of scuffles and fights when we play both teams. Very rarely do you see that when we play Collingwood or Carlton.

I’m not sure where Collingwood and some of the others fit in internally exactly, but everyone within the EFC knows that Hawthorn and Carlton are the enemy.
All our rivals are rank

I think it’s I’vo Crapp.
In terms of hatred it’s:
Fark Carlscum - no explanation needed
Whorethorn - flow on from the 80s and the fact their fans are the biggest bunch of ■■■■■■■ ■■■■■ to ever draw breath.
West Coke - fans are the 2nd biggest bunch of ■■■■■■■ ■■■■■ to ever draw breath, plus the Jobe situation.
The rest are pretty interchangeable depending on circumstance. Right now Port are up there along with Sydney.
The traditional Vic clubs, including the relocated ones.Daylight.
The late comers.
It’s time to let that thing against University go man.
Edit: Grrr. The University jokes have already been done.
F&%KING UNIVERSITYI can not forgive them for the loss back on the 22nd May 1909 at East Melbourne, they beat us ESS 8.11.59 def by UNI 9.14.68.
and all their supporters getting ■■■■■■, nicking witches hats and giving us ■■■■ as they rode down the street in shopping trolleys.
all while on the tax payers dollar.
For me my hatred is clear cut top 8 anyway. Rivalry not so, I really hate norf but as rivals (mid 90’s-early 2000’s excluded) they are not there for me. Same as the aints (never really been there). Logically I think rivalry is held with clubs we perceive to be similar to us (in a twisted sort of way) or having something in common. Flags us and the blose. Historically powerful in size etc the mudlarks. I do hold a begrudging respect for them as we share the Anzac Day match with them, however that tends to evaporate once you hear or see them on the way to the game. I hate the dorks but I used to feel sorry for them in the late 90’s. Now that the dorks have been very successful over the last decade and their designs on expansion are deserving of rivalry.
I don’t think you can put the aints, trashdogs or any of the interstate/expansion sides as they have short histories and whilst you can hate them, I feel that you cannot say that the crows challenge us in any way other than on field. Their supporters are easy to hate but that is not the same as say a carlscum or dorks fan who feels a sense of entitlement that they have some sort of divine right to be at the top. Some would say that same criticism could be levelled at most Essendon fans, which has a ring of truth, but this is a discussion from the Essendon point of view. The eagles are a law unto themselves in their home state and perhaps have some similarities to us. They could challenge us off field but they have not the usual exposure to us that some of the more prominent Melbourne based clubs have. I guess the discussion on rivalry can be seen through supporters ideas of clubs they think occupy a similar “status” to theirs.
Ladder of Hate
1 the blose
2 collingwon’t
3 adelaide
4 norf
5 dorks
6 tigres
7 aints
8 swans
9 west coke
10 lieons
11 port
12 trashdogs
13 Freo
14 GCS
15 GWS
16 Geelong
17 Melbourne
Generally, places 1-8 are fixed, depending on a particular season/s ie aints 2009 swans 05-09. Places 1-12 are a fair way clear of places 13-17. From 2001 till roughly 2010 I had the lieons around second (indeed I hated them more than the mudlarks in 2002-3 when I actually preferred the mudlarks to win those GF’s).
Rivalry I consider a part of an Essendon supporter’s DNA
1 blose
2 collingwont
3 dorks
4 tigres traditionally powerful and popular club, chronic underachievers of the last 30+ years.
No one else jumps out at me, but depending on my mood, how well the other team is going in a particular season my mind may change a little.
EDIT: I should point out that I have a brother that follows the tiggs, one that follows the dorks (hence my pity for them in the late 90’s and even when they won in 2008), a brother, a wife a father in law a an uncle, aunt and cousisns (as well as a family connection) with Melbourne, a father that follows Geelong and a mother that notionally follows sydney so I am a little mixed up. And a long way back I have some family connections to the blose and mudlarks, pity that the talent did not get passed on to me.
I would hope that our players are more professional than to go into a game ‘hating’ the other team. You play to win, regardless. Any other emotion is negative.

F*cking concur.
I’ve noticed a radical increase in c**t-ness amongst Whorethorn supports since the Clarkson/Kennet/unsociable football era. It’s almost as if that was a clarion call from Kennet for every a-hole on this Earth to follow them.

They were lucky, fletch had a shocker that day.
Hawks, Blues and Wilson. Would legitimately laugh at their complete and utter demise.
I LOL at norf and Saints. Pathetic spoof teams.
