Seeing the shining beacon reduced to a cautionary tale?
I care.
It's like watching Superman inject himself with kryptonite and lie comatose in a crack house.

That presupposes said great empire was ever together. History would indicate that it wasn’t and still isn’t. Been split along all sorts of lines since 1776. It’s still is.
Not sure about the shining beacon either.
The real question is why are people in the USA more horrified at police being shot than they were at police shooting others for no reason?
That’s the question they should be asking themselves. Some lives are worth more than others, always have been, and that is the problem.
The US might (should) regret that it didn’t crack down on guns a very long time ago.
‘Great empires’ almost always, if not invariably, eat themselves from within, do they not?
LMW is going there.
I'm not going to pull the pin, but...
I’m going there in a few weeks for a vacation
lucky not going to Dallas but if any more cops shoot black people it could make it an interesting holiday

Would have at least made his last movie more watchable
Everyone’s conditioned now to meh at everything. Everyone’s either completely apathetic or terrified so either do ■■■■ all or spend. World keeps a turnin.
Seriously if little green men want to take over nows the time.

I take your point on what that empire was built on, and consolidated on.
But, no offense, it’s a millennial’s point of view.
We gave as much of a ■■■■ about the blacks that underwrote the country as we did the Mexicans and Puerto Ricans as we did the greyhounds.
You come from a generation that never believed they would see significant nuclear war.
The people who grew up in the forty years prior have a very different view.
But apart from all that, again, 319 million people.
Don’t treat them as one person.
its only going to get worse now. Every cop will have itchy trigger fingers- plus they will want justice/revenge for their fallen officers.
Just a sad state of affairs
IMO that’s why they end up killing so many people there. They would be so fearful of whoever it is killing them, that they ■■■■ themselves and get in first. People are very quick to criticise police, but people need to be considerate of the climate their in.
Exactly. 123 officers killed in the line of duty last year. Where is the hash tag campaign? This is the part of the vicious circle that doesn’t seem to get much mention.
It’s not now.
It’s not yet.
Have to wonder how this would have gone down if the gangs were as organised as they were in the eighties.
They’re not as disorganised as all that now.
It’s late, and I’m paranoid. But HG Wells wrote about it a century ago.
The place is a leader away from self-destruction, imo.
I hope he never arrives. Sort of.

Nah, that’s bullshit.
It’s the US argument.
It’s the Christian argument.
Don’t compare yourself to monsters, or we’ll compare you to monsters.
It’d be a prick of a job with the racial tensions, disproportionate seperation of wealth, drug addictions, gangster culture and the fact that even your SWAT units are a realistic chance to be outgunned in any given incident.
That said, i’m not sure its “shoot a guy you have pinned to the ground multiple times” prickish. But im not there and living it every day.

Millenials point of view? What are you talking about? Not sure what generation you think I come from but I can tell you I was studying American History at LaTrobe Uni in the 1970’s as part of my BA with a double major in history.
I have a bit of a clue.

Lol.
My apologies.
Still though, who were you hoping would be the dominant culture in the seventies and eighties then?
No.

The counter culture. The intellectual version with lengthy involved conversations. That was the 70’s. And we thought we could change the world. It was a time of grand ambition.
For me too I was studying Latin American history including Chile and Cuba with inga Clendinen at LaTrobe and that was an eye opener.
I knew little about Socialism, Marxism, Argraian reform and American imperialism but I learnt a lot. And the people I was mixing with were just as enthusiastic as I was. Fascinating times.
Missed the 80’s culture (thank God because it was awful, all those bad perms, shoulder pads, and greed is good ethos) too involved with working, children, playing basketball, studying. I didn’t even like the music. Too many synthesisers being used because people could.
By the time the 90’s came along I had rediscovered punk, thrash rock and all the music I liked in the 70’s. And had time to read and learn again.
But when you look back it was the very late 1960’s and early 1970’s that were pivotal in defining what we were to become as a country later. It really was a time of opportunity and we did think we could change the world.
Nothing like the kids have now. I feel sorry for them. On the one hand the world is their oyster but only if they have the brains and the money. Because they are not going to get it working casually as a barista here or in New York.
As for what’s happening in the USA, it’s a country with a lot of problems. It is too diverse. My mum has always said that USA should be multiple countries because there are too many different cultures and they are nothing alike.
I think that’s part of the problem. Because ultimately we trust people that are like ourselves. When we perceive people to be different (and the definition of different depends on culture, education, upbringing, genes etc) we are more on guard and more defensive. In the USA those differences are being emphasised daily, particularly by people like Trump.
I can’t write anymore I’m too tired I need to think some more first. Haha
