Agreed. The uncontested nature of our game became way more evident once Parish and Setters went down. It’s great that we could adapt and find another way to compete and win.
The better teams will break us down. All it takes is a hard man-on-man from the opposition, and we’re going to struggle moving the ball against the good sides.
Obviously we are a work in progress, but we’ve played basically all the good sides at this point and I’m not sure our ball movement has been a problem yet?
Correct.
That’s where line breaking defenders thrive.
Guys like Redman and Hind will be weapons.
Used well, the man on man setup can help us create the overlap we need and give Stringer, Wright and Langford one on ones in the forward line.
It’s all part of development. The opposition tries to take away your strength and you try to make them pay for it.
Like you, l can’t remember the last time we had such an armchair ride frin the chumps, l was astounded by the number of free kicks we were given. As for the wayward kicking for goal, that is entirely on the Blooos. The two things are not related and it doesn’t mean we were in any way fortunate or lucky, it was a solid win against a team that had a lot to prove.
I don’t think their scoring shots were significant. I recall that they missed maybe 3 gettable set shots - E Curnow, C Curnow and McKay. Other than that, their misses were a lot of pressured kicks, low probability long range attempts, rushed etc. I think the way we set up (plus their poor skills) prevented them getting it to their forwards inside 50 and having better looks.
Another thing I’ve noticed rewatching the game (I recorded both the 7 and fox footy coverage).
On 7, they showed the teams in the rooms at half time.
Carlton midfield group sitting in the circle having a chat. Nothing direct or appearing to be too meaningful (coach was speaking to one player specifically).
Pan to the Essendon room, backline sitting in the circle. Caracella joins with the iPad and footage to review with all the players gathering around to obviously review key points from the first half. Reid standing with the group to watch and listen too.
The investment to develop and teach our players is becoming more and more apparent.
