yep knights tenure was always doomed to fail whether he could coach or not.
sections of the fan base still wanted sheedy out there.
sections wanted hird
and then his job was as you say to move on a bunch of premiership stars that were long past their best, so you’re ultimately ■■■■■■■ off the playing group as what happened.
like who legit knows if he could coach, cos they actively put down tools in 2010 out of spite to get rid of him.
15 seconds into the third quarter, Langford’s no look handball to Snelling.
This. Friggin’ this.
They’re professional footballers, they have the skill and the awareness to do that. Especially if they know and trust where their teammate will be.
And the more they do it, the more they expect it from each other.
Which gives us speed, and gives us space.
That they’ve been encouraged to do this, given the opportunity to trust themselves and use their skill, that’s a massive difference from the last few years. And it makes claims of former coaches who allegedly ‘backed the players’ seem so hollow.
It’s what Melbourne and Collingwood have in spades. Confidence, belief, trust in themselves and each other. Good teams.
We’re becoming a good team.
Geez, that Guelfi free kick was harsh.
Terrible, really.
I’d have been livid if that was paid against us, in that position, at that crucial stage of the game.
Apart from just being a bad call, it was a terrible read of the game from that umpire.
Stringer with three almost goals in ninety seconds.
Keep going for them.
Tora! Tora! Tora!
(We’re all watching the third quarter in minute detail again, right?)
Agree, you let that go.
I was sitting in Row B (near the fence) between the goal& behind post.
I thought the Free was to Martin for a trip.
Looks like Acres caught the back of Martin’s boot.
There is no replay of the aftermath to Guelfi’s free though.
No touch on Martin that I can see.
I think he’s just gone to ground as soon as he’s heard the whistle, which blows before he goes to ground and the umpire is…probably in Martin’s view.
I think he was trying to ensure advantage wasn’t paid.
No it was definitely to Guelfi. He disposed of the ball to Martin and the tackle continued to the ground. Maybe you could argue for in the back but there’s no way the Carlton defender could have pulled out of the contest. The even up came a few minutes later when Guelfi was penalised in the marking contest again Saad.
I think even the most pessimistic supporter has to be somewhat happy with the first half of this season.
I had us around 12th-16th this year, I didn’t think we had the cattle. But fark me if we can’t see the nucleus of a strong young midfield in Hobbs, Caldwell, Perkins, Martin developing right before our eyes.
I know Carlton clearly stunk it up but they had everything to play for, and it was set up for the classic Essington game where we drop our bundle and roll over, but FINALLY, we have some youngsters who are coming in and saying nope, not happening.
I’m not ready to take the lid off but for the first time in a very very long time I can actually see that we may just have the right players and coach to get a top 4 finish in the next couple of years, something us supporters haven’t seen since 2001.
The wheels could very well fall off in the 2nd half of the season but from what I’ve seen so far, it’s enough to show we have so much more room for improvement when we have a midfield with several players under 50 games leading our team to victory.
We’ve lost to teams better than us but i honesty can’t remember the last time we were consistently beating the teams we should. This is not the same Essendon, for the first time in a very long time, this feels different and I’m bloody excited.
I’m still somewhat guarded though, we have seen so many false dawns and we’ve been tortured and dragged through the mud so many damn times, but i can’t remember the last time I felt so positive about the direction we are headed.
Fingers crossed this is the start of something special because if any fan base deserves a shred of happiness, it’s us.
I quite enjoy her insights but there were a few clangers on Sunday. At one point Draper got shoved in the back in the Carlton goal square in Q4 (I think De Koning or someone took a mark). Draper was pushed so hard that he actually flattened BZT in front of him. He got up and appealed to the ump with arms spreadwide in “wtf” formation, and the ump duly paid the free. Daisy suggested the free was soft and then later doubled down, saying “Even Draper was surprised the free was paid!”
