Regardless of who operates them, that’s their vulnerability. However, you would normally site them out of range of most artillery - but that decreases their accuracy a bit and the area you can scan - typical range isup to 50km
The analogy with the flashlight/torch: you hear a noise in the dark, you turn your torch on to see the source and once you find it, you an turn it off. But in that time that it’s on, everyone around well beyond what you can see with it can see the light from the torch.
Now, I’m no expert nor have I seen them in use but my understanding is that it’s all about timing and priorities
