Season 2019 - Adelaide

Not surprised. too much unrest at that club. several players requesting trades. they need to go full the full painful rebuild.

God, what a fall from grace. he was coaching the best team in the league only 2 years ago… to say its been a disaster following that is an understatement.

Seeya Truck Rutten

Is it Rutten, Goodwin, Bassett or Ben Hart for the job then?

Ross the Boss

They will be after Caracella IMO

So are you saying we should show woosha the door now

Id like to see Bassett given a go He had a good run at Norwood, and thought he was good when he was with us.

I think like us they probably want to not pick a bloke from the old boys school

Pyke will head back to Perth and take the Freo job IMO

Hey @Aceman, what are the Crows opinions on Camporeale? I remember at the time when he was caretaker their was speculation he would get the job over Pyke, but from what I understand they cooled on him very quickly?

Some of the board love him whilst others don’t. The fans dislike him and he is pretty much their Skippy ie being there forever and doing bugger all

I really like the comparison as well as the erie similarities

Isnt there a rift with Camporeale and some of the players, read somewhere on big footy that Jenkins and him blew up pretty bad, and Camporeale is part of the reason Jenkins wanted to get out of there

Yeah, not well liked amongst the playing group.

I will give it to the Crows, they are ruthless in that every coach that has failed to make finals for two consecutive years has been shown the door

Surely one of Caracella or Rutten are gonna get the gig, it would certainly be adding salt to wounds of Worsfold’s 2020 recommitment

I think every team that lost to us this year should sack their coach.

Some of it would have to be the rumours about players leaving, sounds like he had lost some of the players.
Now they are more likely to stay at the crows now they have moved the coach on

What is their fascination with Camporeale? We turfed him at the end of Knights’ tenure because he was so ■■■■■■■ inept it wasn’t funny. Even after beating us by 84 points when they were second last during 2010, they still went and hired this peanut in the off-season.

He has been there for 9 years and has worked under 3 different coaches who have all been removed (I won’t count Walsh).

My guess would be Scott Burns. Clarko said a while back he was losing some of his assistants but no announcements as yet. Would not surprise me at all to see Burns end up at the Crows although I do wonder if Ricciuto has already got into Goodwin’s ear. Surely he’s on thin ice at Melbourne & if they start badly…

Of course Rutten & Bassett would be legitimate options for Adelaide too IMO.

Adelaide’s search to replace Don Pyke as senior coach will begin swiftly ahead of the trade and draft period.

An array of former Crows players will be in the mix — but could the club recruit Ross to become the boss?

These are some of the potential candidates to take on the newly-vacant Adelaide senior coaching role.

BLIGHT: Pyke leaves Crows … for Freo?

STATS: Only five coaches this century had a better record than Don Pyke

THE VETERAN

Ross Lyon

He’s available. Would the Crows go there? Lyon is widely regarded as one of the greatest VFL/AFL coaches to never win a premiership, taking St Kilda and Fremantle to several Grand Finals. When he was sacked by the Dockers last month, you got the sense there was still a fire in the belly to be a senior coach. He’s already had success in a two-team town, too. Imagine him and the South Australian media every week.

THE CROWS FAVOURITE SONS

Ben Rutten

A champion Crows defender who’s very highly rated, to the point where some have speculated he’s the coach-in-waiting at Essendon. But could a return home to the Crows be a more attractive proposition? Rutten has been at Essendon for just 10 months but already made a big impact. After working with Richmond for four years — including the 2017 premiership — he moved to the Bombers to bolster John Worsfold’s coaching department. His determination to grow and improve has rubbed off on players and coaches.

Nathan Bassett

A Crows great that played 210 games in 11 season, which included All-Australian recognition in 2006. But since retiring, Bassett’s coaching stocks have seemingly risen every year. He coached Norwood to consecutive SANFL flags in 2012 and 2013 before moving to Essendon to become an assistant coach. Since late 2015, Bassett has been an assistant at Port Adelaide. Has been on the outskirts of senior gigs for a while, so he could be a strong chance.

THE INTERNAL CANDIDATES

Michael Godden

One of the best internal candidates, even though he’s not the biggest name. The former No. 116 draft pick is one of nine assistants at Adelaide and looks after the club’s midfield. He joined the Crows last October following nine seasons (including a flag in 2011) as coach of Woodville West-Torrens. An Adelaide insider told foxfooty.com.au last month that Golden was upbeat, personable and a fundamentally good person who does not seek accolades and just does his job. While coaching SANFL footy, he played a significant role in the development of Brodie Smith, among others.

Matthew Clarke

Since retiring, Clarke has been a mainstay of the Crows’ coaching panel, primarily as the club’s ruck coach. But he took on the senior coaching reins of the Crows’ AFLW team for 2019 and had immediate success, leading the team to its second premiership. Clarke is excellent at relationship building, plus he already knows the playing list back to front and the landscape at the Crows.

Ben Hart

A Crow through and through. Hart was a star player for Adelaide, winning two premierships, four All-Australian guernseys and two best and fairests. Since retiring, he’s had an excellent coaching apprenticeship, spending four years as an assistant at the Crows before moving to Collingwood to work with Nathan Buckley for five years. After a taking a year off, Hart was back at West lakes in 2018 where he’s spent the past two seasons on the coaching panel.

THE BEST ASSISTANTS

Michael Voss

Since his messy exit from Brisbane after almost five seasons in charge, Voss has been a big hit as an assistant coach at Port Adelaide. He was interviewed for the job at Carlton but ultimately missed out to David Teague. Voss is currently in South Australia, so he and his family are settled there, meaning there’s no issue of moving. Of the current assistant coaches, you could argue Voss is one of the strongest candidates. Could he be the man to revitalise Adelaide’s list and get the club back in flag contention?

Adam Kingsley

Not many candidates have served a better apprenticeship than Kingsley. Since hanging up his boots at the end of 2006 after winning a premiership and a best and fairest at Port Adelaide, Kingsley has worked at three clubs as an assistant coach. He started at the Power and spent four seasons at Alberton before moving to St Kilda, where he spent nine years working under Ross Lyon, Scott Watters and Alan Richardson. Most recently he’s been at Richmond. Having moved interstate for his coaching career before, could Kingsley consider doing the same again for Adelaide? Very highly rated among the coaching circles.

Matthew Nicks

Not a big name, but highly regarded in the AFL coaching fraternity and one to watch. The former Sydney Swan spent eight seasons at Port Adelaide — so he knows the South Australian landscape well — before moving to the Giants to serve as Leon Cameron’s senior assistant. Nicks has excellent relationship skills with players and is able to read those who need a cuddle and those who need to be given direct feedback straight. He is highly spoken about in football circles.

Josh Francou

Former Port Adelaide midfield star Francou moved from Adelaide to Gold Coast at the end of last season following one year working under Don Pyke at West Lakes. Francou spent four years as an assistant coach at Sydney following a stint coaching North Adelaide in the SANFL. The South Australian knows the landscape in Adelaide intimately and was once one of the best midfielders in the AFL, finishing second in the 2002 Brownlow Medal after finishing third the year before, before a knee injury brought his playing career to a premature end.

Jarrad Schofield

After nearly 15 years in Western Australia — which included coaching WAFL club Subiaco to three flags in five seasons — Schofield returned to Port Adelaide last October, where he played 131 games. One insider told foxfooty.com.au that Schofield’s ability to develop young talent was why he joined Port Adelaide. He’s had a profound impact on Xavier Duursma and Zak Butters since he arrived at the club, as well as Karl Amon who has found a new lease on footy life in 2019.

Scott Burns

This man has been ‘in the mix’ for many coaching gigs in the past. Burns played 265 games for Collingwood and has since become one of the most highly rated assistant coaches. He begun as an assistant immediately after his retirement in 2008, joining the Eagles until 2013. He left the club after narrowly missing out on the senior job to Adam Simpson, joining Collingwood as an assistant coach under Nathan Buckley. In recent years he’s been under Alastair Clarkson at Hawthorn, further strengthening his apprenticeship. He’s ready.

Dean Solomon

Solomon has been part of the football department at the Suns longer than anyone else at the club, but seems ready to take the next step. He started when Gold Coast was still in portables and training in a tin shed. Now he’s Stuart Dew’s senior assistant coach. One Suns player has told foxfooty.com.au that Solomon is “ridiculously competitive” and someone who promotes a “dog hungry mentality”.
