Buyer beware any club that takes on Petracca. Prior to the injury he was a bona fide star. OTOH he suffered the most serious injury a players has had in years. There is no guarantee he will make a full and complete recovery.

Mick Warner has an article on the Roffey interview, in the Australian , of all rags ( behind paywall).

The Fotty Show ripping into him ATM, in particular Purple having a RHG at him.

What because it’s taken away from his Trade Radio content?

From what l gather, Purple said that all the talk of Petracca wanting out was driven by him and his management. His latest declaration seen as something of a backdown.

Poor media specialist…

The conversations were private. So nothing was driven by Petracca. Media took it and ran with it as per normal. They then guessed what trade offers could occur to add to their content.

This hysteria was created and ran with by media.
At no stage did they have any comments from Petracca during that period. As per normal, they preferred to keep running with the information without his comment to maximise clicks.

Petracca has no obligations to deny or add to the discussion at this point in time.
Trade Period does not open until October. Still plenty of time for discussions to be had and positions to be held.

Yeah…the Petracca for Harry McKay was my favourite…both clubs denied any discussion, McKay’s management said it wasn’t going to happen, Petracca said nothing at all…and yet they continued to run with it.

Not a single set of ethics amongst the lot of them.

Melbourne don’t have a great track record being open and honest with the media.

And frankly if they were being spoon fed directly by Petracca’s management, it’s on them to check whether it really is delicious hot fudge and not just a steaming turd before shovelling it down.

No. They don’t.
But the media went hunting for the story that could run for a few more days.

A trade wasn’t being done now. Not whilst teams are still waiting for the finals series to actually begin.
All they had to do was reach Petracca for comment. But they skirted around it completely and kept speculating.

News in general is becoming more and more frustrating because they try and project what may happen rather than report on what did happen.

I would say they would have made numerous requests to Petraca and he would have refused to make comment.

Which he has no obligations to provide.
So they could have stated what occurred and let it go. But instead, they focussed on what may occur and let it run for days.

That’s the way the media do things.
They ran with it. On speculation. That’s on them.
Whenever Petracca was good and ready to comment, he provided it.

We’re still 1 month away from trade period opening.
There’s no need to jump to fixed positions.
Plenty of time for things to be sorted out.

It’s been known for a few weeks now that to find an adequate trade would be incredibly difficult.
Petracca will eventually get where he wants. He’ll just have to wait until an opportunity arises.

I think the Petracca will play one more year for MFC. Obviously, no deal could be reached, but, now clubs, have a year to prepare any deal, and more importantly from next year, the trading of future picks two years in advance, will unlock a deal.

If Petracca always knew he was staying he should’ve said something sooner. The club wilted under the scrutiny to the extent that the whole club, and even the president looks like a fool. Why you would leave your club that you love out to dry like that is beyond me.

Which would lead you to the conclusion that there was something in all the talk. This being the case, why did they not manage this better between the 2 parties behind closed doors sooner? Both Petracca and the club should’ve been sitting down straight up to clear the air and shut down the talk, but they didn’t. The entire club and Tracca handled it badly and look like a joke. It was beautiful to watch.

Is he not allowed to explore his options?
Can he not discuss things with his employer and agent?
Is he not allowed to change his mind?
Does he need to tell everyone what he’s thinking daily?

I’m sure those discussions were real. That’s part of ‘clearing the air’. What did Petracca want and what did Melbourne want? What is reasonable (usually a middle ground)? What options were available? That’s not going to get resolved in one sitting. And as with any story there’s usually some embellishment of what was discussed.

I have no doubt if there was opportunity to move, he’d do it. But I’d gather just like 95% of human beings he also doesn’t want to burn bridges along the way.
It was known a week ago that trading Petracca would be tough and there were very few teams that held the capital to be able to trade for him. Something like this takes more than six months to plan out for, trade players out, ‘front load contracts’, etc to free enough space to get him. And that’s before you look into draft picks and what Melbourne may want out of it.

Why the fark does everything need to be so fixed? It’s either one or the other. No grey area.
There’s a month before anything can actually happen.
Plenty of time for discussions to be had, decisions to be made and changed along the way.

Sorry, but I have no sympathy for a media throng that spends 1/3rd of their report on what happened and the rest of their time on what may happen because of it. It gets repeated often enough that when it doesn’t happen, people are left disappointed that it didn’t happen.

Most media loved it though. They got trade radio a month in advance.
This type of reporting will be more of a norm when there’s in season trading.
Lot’s of embellishment and drama reporting to be had.

As a football club and as an individual, I’d just let the media run its course and go on with what I have to do that week. It doesn’t matter what you say nowadays, it gets skewed and torn apart so much that it’s just not worth the time and effort because it won’t change people fixed positions to begin with.

I agree with you regarding the media, but they are who they are. If the AFL media did not exist, the players including Tracca wouldn’t be on the money they are.

Because of the nature of the stories that came out over the last week and Christian’s status at the club, I believe they should’ve handled it better. Both the club and Petracca failed on this one. Funnily enough, they are that shot that next year won’t be any better for the club, the steady flow of news and incidents point to issues that have been there for some time. Their culture is and has been for a long time - shot.

What could they have done?
And what difference does it make?
If both Petracca and Melbourne are still trying to sort their stuff out, there is nothing worth saying until it is sorted out.
A statement about, we’re going through a process and we’ll get back to you later on will just fuel the speculation cycle.

They got out on the front foot about their ‘culture’. And it didn’t change anything. It just bought them time. Nothing they say will change people’s thoughts on their ‘culture’. Because everyone already has a fixed position on it. Unless they won a premiership, that wasn’t going to change.
