Serie A/La Liga/Bundesliga/Other Euro Leagues

Probably another sports betting scandal.

For a smallish club, Sevilla is the master of European Cup competitions - They’ve won seven titles in this format.

Curious as to how people view winning the Europa Conference League. West Ham’s win being described by many media reports as ‘their first major European trophy since …etc’.

I mean we already have the Europa League as the secondary European club competition, and then the Europa conf. League is another bunch of ~40 teams below that. So your winning against a pool of teams that is 40-80th ranked in Europe (give or take).

Would we call that a major European trophy?

I guess it’s no different to before they merged to Cup Winners Cup and UEFA Cup into the Europa

They’d struggle to be the 8th best team in London.

Wasn’t the cup winners cup comprised of teams that had won their domestic league? So basically the top 2 teams combined with the UEFA Cup which has always been a second tier European tournament.

So they merged what would be contemporary Champions League level teams with domestic Champions. A far cry from some of the clubs mixing it in the conference league.

I’m just surprised it gets taken seriously- I mean why not have 3 or 4 more European tournaments so all clubs can win a ‘major European tournament’.

No, the Cup winners Cup started as just that. The winners of domestic Cups such as FA Cup etc

Yeah in order of importance it used to be:

European Cup
Cup Winners
Uefa Cup

The Euro and Winners Cup played off in the Euro Super Cup.

Pretty much a similar set up now.

Been a Hammers supporter for almost 30 years and while I acknowledge this isn’t a major trophy, seeing the club lift any kind of trophy is pretty awesome. Football hasn’t exactly been a happy pastime for me in a good few years, but the Hammers have won something and the Bombers are in the eight and are clearly on the improve. Feels like some kind of parallel universe.

Not the exact spot to put this, but by all reports Carlo Ancelotti has been announced as the Brazil manager, commencing July 2024, which is in line with the end of his current Real Madrid contract. He will be the first non-Brazilian to coach the national team in 58 years!

Bellingham. That is all. Wow.

Bellingham and Kane with some rippers on the weekend, Kane from his own half on a bizarre 8-0 match with three red cards, Bellingham ripped out a sizzler then scored another in his first El Clasico.
