Something seriously wrong with the club (Part 2, March 2022)

Was gonna say the same thing

Yeah nah. You think the problem is with the team.
I think the problem is with the club.
The team has changed over the past twenty years. The coaching staff have changed.
The club has not improved.
Someone further up the thread mentioned white bread mediocrity. That’s what we are. A pleasant nice mediocre club.
We get good players. They go backwards.
Once or twice might be a personal issue. But this happens all the time.
And when it happens all the time, It’s a cultural problem, and that comes from the top.
I mentioned further up the thread if we are going to just go get people then when should be getting Brendon Gale and Peggy O’Neil. Even if just to do a review. They know how to build success.
The problem is, it wouldn’t matter what the results of a review were, the Essendon club is far too arrogant to take the results on board if they didn’t like what came out of it.
And if it were a decent review, guaranteed they wouldn’t.

It’s much deeper than a player personnel issue.

Add a new list manager to the list of roles that need to be refreshed.

Exactly

FFS Alby ■■■■ off with your Left crap!

Nailed it.

I/we all have Stockholm Syndrome.

Yesterday was the first time EVER I did not watch the last quarter (after that 3rd quarter :unamused:) just couldn’t watch. (went and made some nachos instead).

That’s a great alternative.

I got called into work and gladly accepted the distraction.

I would have watched that, instead of the last quarter.

losers breed losers

our senior guys like hooker/heppell/bellchambers/zaharakis/Hurley all taught this current crop of senior/middle aged players. not one of them has any idea what success is. none. not one knows what it takes to be successful in a AFL enviroment. the only guys we have had who know, are goddard and stringer, yet stringer is still unprofessional in the back half of his career so disregard him

we’ve now got guys like hind/cutler/redman/Smith/mcgrath/merrett teaching the kids, like cox/perkins/reid/draper/hobbs/jones/caldwell etc.

thats what culture is. and our culture is a losers culture. it has been for 20 years, and it starts from the top. we need better standards

edit - basically what @efc1robbo said

Goddard really did try to break this mould and wasn’t able. It’s going to take something remarkable to turn this club around.

And there you have it. Why on earth are we bringing Hurley back? He hasn’t been at his best for years. Why wasn’t he encouraged to retire gracefully at the end of last year? Any other club would have sent him on his way, contract or no contract.

It’s not ignoring half the statement. The statement is very clear. I don’t think you’re an idiot, you must be choosing to ignore it.

In answer to your questions - we picked Tex over Dev then he gave us 6 touches in 2 games of footy and Dev outperformed him in one half. He’s not ready. Bryan is someone I would be playing but they obviously think the Draper Bryan combo is too green. I can’t argue with that. Hobbs playing round 5 is hardly a ridiculous wait, and Shiel obviously has plenty to contribute over the next 3-4 years.

True

And why the coach is important….

As Tim watson once said. They had no idea how to win until sheedy got there.

Agree, he should have been paid out

Agree

Wonder if he would like to be our stoppage/midfield coach

Still paying for the mistakes of the supplements saga.

These group of players went through hell and the club, rightfully, tried to accomodate them all. Unfortunately some of that has been to the detriment of our list and future.

If he played for any other club, he wouldn’t be there this year.

Another feather in our disintegrating cap…

I keep having to say this, but Dodoro is a big part of and a big influencer of the culture. He’s been here for 20 years and is a part of the boys club.

He is a buddy with the senior players and has said he looks forward to the players he picks building on their property portfolios.

Bellchambers, arguably the biggest example of the entitled non hard working culture at Essendon, said in his exit interview that he hoped Dodoro, would stay, as he’s a “good Essendon person”. Bellchambers wouldn’t know what an accountable successful culture would look like. He was happy getting 20 hit outs a game while doing nothing around the ground.

If we want a ruthless playing culture, we’ve got to have a ruthless executive culture too

Thought this was an interesting observation last night on Twitter from our ex “football services co-ordinator”.

Perhaps a disgruntled ex-employee but would still have very close connections to the club.
