Something seriously wrong with the club (Part 3, August 2022)

yep and the one that was legitimate was buried so deep no one knew about it til i think jobe accidentally spilled the beans cos it was done by one of his nfl idols.

That’s not a plan that’s just going the basics that every club needs to do.

letx circle back to the matter at hand

I was in favour at that time of backing in stability to see the club see through a plan for the first time in over a decade.

It wouldn’t matter who the Prez / CEO is, if a leadership group isn’t given an opportunity to implement and see through a plan / program then the club wouldn’t succeed.

Whether this regime is implementing the right plan is to be determined. However, deciding 15 months into its commencement to ditch it will only prolong the pain.

as others have said, the board should look at themselves first and foremost, and either resign or be removed for incompetence.
a new board need to be brought in and LEGITIMATELY determine what is best for moving the club forward.

Cos as you so eloquently point out with all those replacements to positions you just mentioned, the exact same problems onfield and in relation to the players are still there 2 years on, even with a supposed bigger empahsis and focus on improving them.

Did brasher and xavier and rutten not preach patience and that progress isn’t linear and it takes time (hell even ■■■■■■■ worsfold said that), yet they went out and got scott who says the exact same thing.

The board, and the pool of people who are drawn to the positions on the board are the issue, cos they keep putting self interest and networking with other wealthy knobjockeys above actually doing whats best for the club.

like it or not, a fair chunk of this board advocated for this path and made all those changes, and it’s failed so far, so they should be held accountable for that, at the very least.

Who in their right mind would accept a job at Essendon if we don’t let Scott, Vozzo and co finish what they’ve started?

Number of AFL debuts for Essendon since 2010

2010 - 8 (Knights)
2011 - 4 (Hird)
2012 - 6 (Hird)
2013 - 4 (Hird)
2014 - 7 (Thompson)
2015 - 3 (Hird)
2016 - 5 (Woosha)
2017 - 3 (Woosha)
2018 - 4 (Woosha)
2019 - 3 (Woosha)
2020 - 3 (Woosha)
2021 - 7 (Rutten)
2022 - 7 (Rutten)
2023 - 2 (Scott)
2024 - 1 (Scott)

We have had our lowest introduction of new AFL talent over the past 18 months then we have had in at least 14 years.

I’m going to keep harping on about this because it’s ■■■■■■■ insane when you look at the numbers. AFL debuts are an indication of where a club thinks it’s at and what process it is actually going through in terms of its list.

Whether or not the players you are debuting actually make it or not, it is so important to be giving new kids the opportunity, testing them, developing them, seeing how they go. Injecting youth into a team can do wonders.

You see during the Rutten 2 years, a heavy introduction of new AFL players, the closest we have been towards going down a rebuilding path, and people wonder why 2022 was a struggle, even after we finished 2021 with our best % in a decade + the usual elimination final meltdown.

This introduction of new AFL players has fallen off the cliff, in exchange for backing in older players, bringing in older players externally, and week in week out backing in od our current young and mid aged underperforming players.

Ben Rutten asking Essendon fans for patience was an easier pill to swallow when the list was so inexperienced and young with so many new players getting an opportunity, compared to Brad Scott seeking the same patience with a bunch of old players, record low levels of AFL debuts and a continual backing in of underperforming senior players

people said the exact same thing after sacking rutten.

it’s an easy money job (albeit a short tenure) plenty of people will take jobs here, just like every ■■■■■■ team gets people employed there, there’s only 18, soon to be 19 clubs, so there’s limited spots to get a gig.

its way simpler than that

team wins = supporters engage with content that pumps them up
team loses = supporters engage with content that criticises them

the reverse doesn’t get anywhere near the same metrics. single digit percentage.

there’s no broader narrative or strategy. just selling ad space

The ‘plan’ (and I use that term incredibly loosely here) is just to maintain the new status quo.

It’s the same boring, unimaginative, ultra conservative and entirely risk-averse approach that will see us remain exactly where we are because it’s essentially the same thing we’ve always done.

Stack the board with clowns like Muir and Welsh and use sheedy to get the 3000 people that vote onside to entrench the power base.

Just in case, also unilaterally appoint more shills directly onto the board to ensure that the incumbent political faction will retain power regardless of any election process in the short to medium term.

Nobody will notice that none of this group have achieved any success for the club or made any decisions leading to significant positive outcomes for the club because hey hurr durr ex player welsh and club legend sheedy huzzah…etc

Essendon members are quite easily fooled and even more easily distracted after all.

Hire a polite introverted yes man in Vozzo who will do as he’s told and won’t rock the boat. Another easily controlled puppet for the board who’s just happy to be there.

Let the outgoing cancerous footy department head essentially shoehorn in his mate(also a failure of an appointment) because that’s a recipe for success…

Hire yet another coach arbitrarily and without a thorough and considered process because…reasons.

Recruit poorly, keep Dodoro, add a some
Unproven hacks like Rosa and RFK to give the appearance that it’s not a 1 man show, , underinvest in key areas such as the VFL, pretend we’re investing in development by having ex-club folk like Stanton and Hurley on the books.

Commit to a game style that flies in the face of 2 decades worth of league wide evidence that suggests the approach doesn’t stack up.

Continue to underinvest in high performance and medical and get the same results as always.

Change nothing on field - poor coaching, horrible selection, non existent development of young players, chase short term sugar hits, continue to prove we aren’t good enough to beat the legitimately good teams.

Sign up members with some ■■■■■■ marketing that sells the illusion that we are somehow improving and progressing ie; Caldwell had 30 possies - how good!! How awesome is Sam Durham!!!

We just won’t mention that Ridley and Parish are now part timers through injury. Wright is a one hit wonder. Our f/s selections are all meh. Redman has turned into a complete c grader. McGrath is up there with the worst pick 1s in history. Tsatas can’t kick. Hobbs can’t kick. Reid can barely walk. Bryan was the future 5 minutes ago now he’s about to be moved on. Bar caddy there is next to no exciting young talent coming through.and even if there is we won’t recognise it and will likely move them on like Massimo.

That’s what you’re comfortable advocating for?

That’s the approach that you think we need to give more time and support to?

Maybe you can buy a few extra memberships to support the club while everyone else gives them a massive, well deserved if incredibly overdue GAGAF.

Yup strip the whole board, medical staff and coaching group total rebuild of the entire club.

Total rebuild, enough of this rubbish finishing 9-15th for next 5 years.

Trade out players with worth, bring in youth

If that’s all to hard merge with North we are a tin rattler club on field

well said.

you’re arguing with a pr spin plant and gaslighter though, so it’s legitimately pointless, but good post.

Fk our playing group.

Yes, i think stability is key for the time being… I think next year is an important year for the current regime.

Thats not to say they should be sitting on their hands. They should be scrutinising the program and making changes as needed.

No need to get personal. Just stick to the topic. There’s nothing wrong with having different views.

Fans asking for a full rebuild what makes you think it will succed?

We cant even get this current goup of players to perform/change after all the changes the club has made under Barham

Only way i see us getting out of this mediocre cycle is with the AFL stepping in and thats never going to happen becasue we are one of the big clubs and nothing like North

We are farking rooted

Unfortunately our players knew Shiel was weak and they would’ve been happy for Parker to make Shiel look weak

Whatever the issues are, this current list of players cannot get the job done. They are simply not up to it. Two years in a row now the same fade outs are happening half way through the season. Those in this group need to be clearly identified and shipped out, no excuses.

What do you think the vibe will be if this time next year it’s much of the same as we’ve experienced the past 18 months? Is there a red line where even you go nah this ain’t it champ?

See through what plan? X had been there for 10 years.
