I dont think these spuds want to play finals. Too hard, too much work. Better off lying on a beach in Ibiza drinking Pina Coladas and chatting shielas up telling them they are AFL players. No one over there even knows what the AFL is.

Just because we decide to rebuild doesn’t mean West Coast and North suddenly get good too.

Confidence is a wonderful thing and the Dawks have it in spades at the moment. When was the last time an Essendon supporter was confident about anything to do with this rabble of a club

Bob Murphy used to write a lot about the winter grind. “The blue skies are gone, the optimism is tested,” he wrote. “This is the time of year for routine, repetition, aches, solitude, pain, will and resolve. The depths of winter are the time of year when the hardened, experienced teams who have been there before start to rev their engines and put a gap between themselves and the pretenders.”
For a team that plays its home games indoors, the winter grind has not traditionally been an area where Essendon has excelled. Last year, they entered winter in sixth spot. The next three months heralded five wins from 12, a percentage of 73, 11th spot and solemn vows to get fitter and more serious.
This year, Essendon entered winter in outright second position. They had a favourable draw. They had 10 games in a row in Melbourne. They had plenty of contenders around them who were dropping games. They’ve since won two from eight, with a percentage of 79.
It’s why their fans trudged to the Docklands on Saturday with a sense of impending doom. Their opponent was one of those dangerous floaters that cause misery every season – the sort of team whose season has ended early but who have finally found form, who are looking to salvage something out of their season, who have nothing to lose, and who are looking to take a few scalps.
The Bombers had already encountered one of those sides a week earlier when the Crows beat them by two points. Now they had Ross Lyon’s Saints to deal with. If you’re flaky, have holes and aren’t up for the fight, Lyon will expose and exploit it.
So it proved. It was a dirty day, particularly the third term, the kind of half hour that ends seasons and extinguishes hope. The Bombers offered little resistance. They were slaughtered in the air and sliced to bits by Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera. They made Cooper Sharman look like Nick Riewoldt. It was a dismal performance. In some ways, it was an entire decade of football boiled down to half an hour.

Jake Stringer came to the club with a scowl, a neck tattoo and a 10-page disclosure. The Bombers, as always, were crying out for a bit of aggression. Stringer has it in theory, but his entire career has been conducted in theory. Earlier this year, on tired legs, he kicked the long-range goal that scuttled St Kilda. But he barely gave a yelp on Saturday. In many ways, he’s emblematic of the entire team – good for the occasional sugar hit, but not a footballer for the long haul.

It isn’t just losing to them… it’s the manner in which we lost. Runs of unanswered goals, diabolical skills, apparent lack of care factor, meek acceptance. Against bottom half of the ladder teams!!!

Our ladder position doesn’t just slightly flatter us… we are every bit a bottom third of the ladder team. The first half of the season was fools’ gold. There hasn’t been any progress whatsoever. Same old Same Olds…

I just can’t believe people are still losing sight of the fact that we were top 4 for half the season.
I mean they are not, but if finals were decided at the start to June, we’d be right up there!

I agree with that. Scott I think now needs to make some tough selection calls. Some experienced players have let him down and I think Scott needs to draw a line. I think 3-4 changes could occur this week.

Well said. The last two weeks aren’t about ability, it’s about ‘effort and intent’ as the coach says… The ‘edge’. It needs to return and if it does, slot if the other gameplan related problems are mitigated and they can win games.

No supporter will sit through a rebuild. Supporters would still complain about all the same things and we’d be then sacking coaches because it’s taking too long to show progress.
If we are making list and coaching decisions with a consideration of “will this keep the fans happy”, everyone involved should be sacked.
The only consideration should be whether the decision moves us closer to a premiership. If the answer is no, and I think the current approach is clearly a massive no, ditch it and do something else.

Don’t agree at all. I’d rather see us full rebuild and bottom out for the next few years than put up up with these same pea hearts we have now. The club has refused to do things properly and has always looked for the half arsed measures and here we are. Until the club acknowledges that the list is junk and the board are useless we will continue to see the same crap year in year out.
Any sane person can see this list isn’t going anywhere and at some point we need to rebuild, the longer we hold off the longer we remain irrelevant
