The 1993 premiership - 30 years ago today

Our ongoing lack of success is a much more bitter pill to swallow for those who remember how dominant a force we were in the 90s and early 00s…Every weekend I would watch us play and just expect to win; it didn’t matter if we were down at halftime, 3/4 time or even into the final term, I just knew we would find a way to win; such was a the quality of the team. With each season that passes, those days feel more like imaginings than past memories.

Fark it’s depressing reading these posts from Blitzers who were lucky enough to see us win finals and flags.

The most I’ve ever seen us achieve is winning 2 Elimination Final matches when I was 9-10 years old. I turned 29 the other week lmao

The only GF I’ve been to, we got free tickets and it was a glorious day. I wasn’t that disappointed at the time, either, but that has changed as the years passed. Yes, Brisbane was a very good team, but they didn’t play especially well that day. I mean Shaun Hart got the Norm Smith Medal. We had three good players (Lucas, Lloyd, J. Johnson) and probably four or five others who got a pass mark, but we had a bunch of guys who were total crap (Hird, Mercuri, Blumfield, Hardwick, Rioli, Barnes, M. Johnson, Heffernan). You simply can’t carry that many poor performers in a GF. We were terrible that day, the club went into a coma at half-time of that match and we’ve never come out of it.

Having said all that, '93 was totally awesome!

When I turned 29, I had already seen 3 premierships…

Man, I remember this day as if it was yesterday - such a good memory. I was a kid in Primary School; we watched the game at a family friends house in Bayswater.

  • Salmon kicking the first goal
  • Calthorpe’s bomb for goal that landed somewhere in the stands
  • Mill Hannah getting completely rubbed out by Dean Wallis
  • Bomber Thompson being a brute in the contest
  • Wanganeen doing his thing
  • Hirdy kicking a goal as a young buck

Good days for the Essendon team.

I had seen 3 and experienced the 4th just one month before my 30th. I was averaging a Flag every 7.5 years now its every 13.25 years on average

I thought it was TD in 1984. Or maybe he’d just kicked it.

Well, I for one just can’t visualise Weideman with ball in hand when we win our next flag…

Me too, so checked the footage & he handballed it a fraction of a second before the siren, so technically, the ball was mid-air, on its way to Foulds, as the siren sounded. He then booted it into the crowd. Nice souvenir for some lucky soul.

I stood, got there early. I remember some deluded FC supporter bleating ‘Go, Diesel’ all day. And of course, who is better to beat than FC?

Athorn - Surely one of the worst performances in a GF

Be thankful that you weren’t born 5 September 2004 or later.

The week before, Essendon supporters were very quiet at half time

It was a magic day and one that’ll live in my memory forever. I was in the Southern Stand AFL members ………got a birdseye view of Michael Long’s goal ……the roar in the Southern Stand was deafening. First quarter we smashed them. Ricky O brilliant first half and Dean Wallis’ hit on Mil was brutal. Gary Odonnell was stiff not to win the Norm Smith. Harvey was very good at CHB after a few weeks off. All round even spread of good players that day. They all contributed

I’m lucky enough to be friends with two members of the 93 Flag. Seeing one this week and one next week. I’ll make sure we discuss that magnificent 93 Premiership

I thought it was TD that had the ball in his hands at end of 84. He threw it in in the air

He was handpassing as the siren went.

Most GF wins have a “yep, we’re gunna win” moment. Bewicks goal mentioned here was that for me in this GF puts us 8 goals up well into the 2nd quarter.

One performance that I don’t think has been mentioned in here was that of Mark Mercuri. Twenty-three disposals and three goals, and how about that ripping handpass to Denham for a goal in the first quarter? Mercuri was 19 at the time, in his 23rd game. Amazing.
