The 2022 Cricket Thread officially here

No chance Punter is in the frame given those comments. And I don’t think he’d want it anyway, has indicated previously that the sheer time away from home doesn’t suit his family circumstances.

Maybe, however England very much like him and Strauss, who has taken over atm, is a massive fan of Langers.

Both those wins were after Langer took a less prominent role. The assistants were much more involved than before those series.

I watched Steve Smith laughing at Marnus’ Hobart dismissal - which was disgraceful - and wondered at the time what Langer’s opinion would have been. I suspect I’d share Langer’s thoughts on that. But there’s clearly a generation divide within the group.

I don’t like how this has been handled, and I don’t think the Test side is good enough to not require some home truths be told. Interesting times ahead if the playing group only want to hear “nice” , which is what I fear. Particularly on the batting front. We’re nowhere near the best test side in the world in terms of batting.

Either way, Langer has been hung out to dry and deserved better. If Warne thinks coaches are over rated, what do we think of crap like “director of high performance” ? The game is overburdened with nonsensical bureaucracy.

When the players shook hands after the Hobart test there must have been about 20 support staff for both the Aussies and Poms. That’s a huge number of different voices that the players are having to listen to. That can’t be helpful.

From the moment Langer and Tim Paine took over as coach and captain the whole team turned around. Now both of them have gone. It’ll be interesting to see how things go from here.

Langer hasn’t been ruled out as England’s next coach. Now that would be an interesting mix. I wouldn’t think he would do it in normal circumstances, but after they way he’s been treated he just might.

how do poms take to over religious zealots?

Say what?

Pretty sure if I remember right Lehman pretty much lost control of the playing group with Warner an smith in charge an acting like angry idiots out in the field an look where that got us. Bit of tough love an see ya later. Sooks

Englands issue is talent, not coaching. They need better talent id and pathways for future talent.

What’s that got to do with them picking someone they like as coach?

I didn’t even know he was religious, so either I don’t pay that much attention to it (possible) or it’s a complete non-factor here.

Started with 2 or 3 straight losses, didn’t he?

Because there are more suitable candidates. Langers style will not help England play better test match cricket with their current group of players. Langer could be Australias gift to England.

We aren’t privy to what’s gone on behind the scenes, but this so-called “mutiny” in August was a sign that Langer’s methods had worn on a playing group. Usually those really intense coaches don’t last long in the one job. And if they do, they have to adapt and change. Once that meeting occurred where he was told to be less hands-on and be more in the background, it was the beginning of the end. The unexpected T20 WC win and the ease of the Ashes win meant that at least publicly Langer mounted a strong case to remain in charge. But this decision was made long ago and they’ve in effect been managing his exit since the start of the summer. They wanted him out, and offered him an extension he knew he wouldn’t accept, and he’s decided to resign rather than serve the rest of his contract out. Time will tell if the decision to change coach was the right call, but the way it’s been handled by CA has been nothing short of disgraceful. Langer deserved better.

This ‘over religious zealot’ stuff being parroted on here is garbage.
You’d think he was acting as though he was David Koresh judging by a select few poster’s inane and ignorent comments that do nothing but highlight their own prejudice.

I wish JL all the best in whatever he does next.

Tough time for a new coach to take over with three test series in the subcontinent coming up.

Not if he is an existing coach who has been there already for a bit. I think this is why people consider McDonald a front runner. He has the upcoming series to show something.

Being among the group already would be an advantage but regardless of who it is, 3 test series in the subcontinent is a challenging way to start.
