The 2023 Draft Thread

Can rookie players only play seniors if there’s a long term injury?
Can someone explain what the point of the rookie draft is? Thanks

No point really, could just be adding extra players to main list as they get same opportunities to play just less $$. could just change draft to after pick 50, only 1 year deals.

AFLPA want to get rid of rookie list.

Another ruck in the Rookie draft would be good, not sure if there are any left though. Other than that i am quite pleased with the draft/trade period. Finally we are being pro active and trying to get things done. Not everything and every player will work out but if we continued to do what we have done for the last 20 years then we would get the same mediocfre results.

Correct, I’d rather we take some chances to fill needs rather than ending up with 10 identical players who were best available.

A decent draft, i wanted caddy then one of jiath or lual, plus one of hall or Stevens.

Disappointed we are again going into another season with no strength or size in the midfield and wondering if it will ever be addressed? I honestly don’t think we will be a good side until we address this fundamental flaw and have thought that for at least 5 years now.

Hopefully a change away from dodoro will result in a change in strategy, more emphasis on strength and kicking skills, less drafting of defenders (failed forwards can always go back) and better relationships with opposition clubs (ie. Giants, dogs etc).

I agree with what you’re saying.
I thought Stevens was a good fit. He could begin off the backline (which was a need) and work his way into the midfield and help with our size.
It is a glaring list need that needs to be addressed.

I suspect Stevens was thought to be too one dimensional which is a problem we have with our current midfield (too small and very few are ‘defensive minded’) that leaves very little wriggle room for having a flexible group of players running through the midfield.
I think the midfield deficiency can be addressed through the rookie draft. Someone like Jack Bytel would be a great pickup that helps with his size and is also very determined defender.

I was thinking we pass on a rookie pick and go with a SSP pick in the next few months, but I don’t think that’s such a great way to go. I doubt we get experienced players (like Bytel) that way. He’d probably prefer the assurance of getting onto a VFL list and finding his way back through the mid season draft.

SSP picks seem to be more for players who haven’t had much of an opportunity and can afford to spend pre-season at an AFL club without missing out on an opportunity through VFL or other leagues.

We have time. We’re not contending for a flag in the next 2 years and we have a draft and FA/ trading next year with a strong cap to leverage.

The Club has achieve strong progress addressing list needs. Opportunities will hopefully arise the next 12-24 months to close off remaining list holes.

George Stevens is 189 and 101kgs. Not many afl players have that sort of ratio. Must be a few chubby chasers on Blitz

Interesting to see what we do here

Seems to be we only have 1 open list spot (unless the veterans list add on actually came in and Hep is the extra)

But on assumption we only have one spot do we:

  • pick a ready to impact player
  • pick an injured player, put them on inactive list and still have SSP/MSD opening
  • not pick anyone to leave SSP/MSD opening

Probably need a small forward option today. Is Sanchez available?

Taha might be an option as a catb ball winner who might boost our VFL team over time. Otherwise I’d give a ready to go big bodied midfielder a train-on spot for either SSP or MSD, and hope they stay on for a VFL season to bolster the squad a bit.

Come on Dodo i want my DIRTY SANCHEZ

It would be nice to have a ready made player…Powell Pepper proportions 187cm 98kg

Callinan might also be a chance.
