Towelled up by McGrath last week. Shut him down. I think Brodie, McG and McC would all be well ahead of him and a better fit for us.
Dyson Heppell was towelled up by Guthrie in one of the TAC finals in 2011. I don’t think anyone in their right mind would call Guthrie a better player than Heppell now.
Very different situation, Guthrie was always seen as a run with player, Heppell had 40 poss in the Plelim, Guthrie ran with Heppell all game and held him to 20 possessions, Heppell was the only reason they made the GF to begin with. I watched both these games.
I remember saying Heppells under 18 season was better than Gibbs, boy did I cop it left right and centre, Heppell was amazing.
I liked Heppell so much I had even ordered his under 18 championship games on DVD, still have them as they never showed the under 18s on TV back then.
Ainsworth and McGrath were both seen as top 5 picks, one being the best 1/2 back/mid, the other the best small forward/mid, Ainsworth kicked 4 goals in the 3rd qtr, McGrath went to him kept Ainsworth to 2 possessions while McGrath had 12 or 14 possessions.
Lots of people saw McGrath beat one of the draft most dangerous players 1 on 1, Ainsworth is a powerful unit and McGrath wasn’t over powered.
Looking back, Ainsworth shouldn’t be judged to harshly on that battle as we have seen McGrath become as hard to play against as any in this draft.
Ainsworths problem was the game against the Allies where he gathered only 7 possessions and his team lost by less then 1 goal.
For me Ainsworth has a similar profile to Jack Billings who went at pick 3 - Forward type who could run the midfield - And Billings is struggling to come to terms with AFL footy.
It’s not often I agree with you, but I had the exact same thought. I have a soft spot for the saints due to my wife and her passionate saints family, but gee they are thinking what if now relative to Billings and the bloke who the doggies picked immediately after, one Marcus Bontempelli.
Playing against best 50 kids in this years draft today and the kid looks like a jet…prob best on at min. Super quick and skillfull. Easy to draft players with either attribute…hard to find players who are elite in both.

The times I’ve seen him, he goes missing for large periods of the game. I don’t think we can handle that.
