I posted this in music though perhaps it should have been here. Live music in 1970s and 1980s in Melbourne was great. Thursday nights particularly.
They are a great band. Left was only 3 years ago and they have toured a lot.
Plus Gen X/Y kids are starting to go to gigs with their folks is my guess.
Beck with the philharmonic was exceptional last night.
In hindsight I wish I had gone. And regretting not getting Split Enz tix too.
Was there last night. They were great!
My mate walked out after 5 songs. Said it was the most self indulgent ■■■■ he’s ever seen.
Yep it was not for everyone. Kind of expected when you have a man and a borrowed orchestra. Gave a lot of insight and gave us a journey through his musical direction over time and artists who provided his inspiration. He covered and introduced us all to a very self indulgent Scott Walker who has made albums Scott 1, Scott 2, 3 and 4. Scott would have been the same vintage as Neil Diamond and Joni Mitchell and sounds like he is their love child.
Split Enz were great. Took a while for the crowd to get going, understandable since average age was 60+. But the band looked like they were having so much fun.
I thought the first 5 songs of the night were amazing, atmospheric and I loved it. But then it became a little patchy, some brilliant and some meh moments for me. Overall it was a good gig, your friend should have stayed.
Beck’s last 2 tours were better though.
My first Split Enz concert in 1975, got about $3 to get in.
There were a few other groups that were OK as well.
6 digit phone number!
It was 51 years ago and my hair was below my shoulders and covered the top.
I actually remember that night, as we had seats in the second row at festival hall.
Who were the best band that night?
Hooks were great, Split Enz were good but a bit new to us, AC/DC were legendary even then.
Adjusted for inflation that gig is only 28 dollars. Bargain!
Just three average music groups as well !
It was a long time ago and there was so much music to see then, I cannot remember exactly but always Festival Hall was packed and this concert went for maybe five or six hours. I am not sure who was lead vocal wth AC/DC then, think it was one of the first Bon Scott gigs but it could have just before him.
We went to see Skyhooks the others were just support !
But Bob Hudson’s satirical ditties best of all?
I can’t remember Bob Hudson that night, saw him live in Sydney once and he wrote some good songs. Did enjoy his work on 2JJ, a long time ok when I lived in Sydney.
