The Cricket Thread (part 4) - from Boxing Day 2022

Lyon’s away average is better than both Ashwin and Jadeja. (29, 32, 35)

Lyon is a wonderful bowler and he proved his worth once again last night but there’s probably not a heap to be gleaned from that comparison is there given that Lyon bowling away gets to bowl in India unlike those two

Whether they play more tests in Sri Lanka or Bangladesh than Lyon though, maybe.

India has also become a challenging place for the home top order to score runs. Many of them are lacking experience against quality spin on turning wickets because they seldomly play Ranji Trophy and thus don’t have the footwork and defense to counter the variable bounce and turn. The BCCI should understand that these kinds of pitches actually hamstring the home team as much as the tourists. The conventional Indian wicket is a dream to bat on for the first 3 days then crumbles day 4 and 5; I preferred these pitches far more to whats currently being prepared.

You could look at it another way and say that enhances his brilliance at home on (generally speaking) unfriendly wickets, given his craft. His consistency across the world is what makes him a great.

I was meant to quote/reply to CB’s post about Ashwin being hard to judge because of the pitches etc.

His record is great, (plus 5 test centuries too) but it is very heavily weighted at home. I’m not even a huge Lyon guy but he’s had to play most of his career on crap spin pitches in comparison.

A good article and read.

The last grand battle between Pujara and Lyon?

Yeah certainly no arguments there. For an off spinner to perform as well as he has done for as long as he’s done on Australian pitches says that he’s an absolute master at his craft. He obviously worked out how best to bowl (more overspin to extract bounce) at home pretty early on. He’s been a marvel.

Yeah that’s fair.

The other thing I was just thinking is that India play one fewer test nation than everyone else because they don’t ever play Pakistan. Well certainly not for a long time. So without trawling through and comparing, they do probably end up playing the Sri Lanka’s and Bangladesh’s a little more than say we would.

That catch was an absolute gem. Because of the angle of the bat on ball, he would have picked it up late and it was not only low but almost past him. Smith was elated with the catch and had every right to be. He was also well aware of how important that dismissal was.

Ridiculous, if the player is out it is out fullstop.

Imagine the scenes if the batter smashed a ball to the keeper but they had to ignore it because they appealed for a stumping

To me the reviews should act as an extension of the on field umpire

You don’t say “how’s that for caught behind”.

(Well, sometimes).

This test and pitch is a great example of India farking around and finding out. Well deserved loss coming up.

We’re not there yet. But we deserve to win if we do.
Potentially Lyon’s best Test performance this …

India have shown they’re complacency and lack of respect for the opposition in this test. You should never just expect to win by simply showing up.

Some of the stumping reviews are ridiculous imo. It’s pretty easy on most of them for an umpire to say not out. Square leg umpire is probably only sending it up because he knows his mate at the bowlers end is incompetent.

Random but does Rory Sloane open for Queensland over the summer months under the pseudonym Bryce Street?

It was tip-and-run (or tippety-run) in my neck of the woods as a kid.
Is this a parma/parmi thing?

This bloke is just jealous that Australia have used the loophole more than India.

Where’s the support for your fellow keepers? Every keeper I know thinks every time they take the bails off it’s a stumping.
