The Pre-Season Supplemental Selection Period (SSP)

I think the club wants to keep that open for the MSD, only started looking when Baldwin went down.

Edit - what he /\ said

Happy with the call. If he’s an absolute can’t miss, lock to be best 22 then go for it. If not, keep the spot open and go off more exposed form this year…

We will leave the spot open

Should’ve got Marty Gleeson, the actual best VAFA player

This is specifically to do with Category B rookies rather than SSP but as we sit here with none it would be nice to be as active as Collingwood are in securing/pursuing top end talented guys who chose a different elite sporting pathway.

They have already signed the rights to Alex Condon, 212cm kid who would have gone early in the first round had he not tried his hand at making the NBA in the states through the college system.

And now they are red hot in pursuing Victorian cricketer Will Parker who was another in the mix for first round selection in his under 18 year.

Agree, Richmond just signed a former rugby player from New Zealand, looks to play like karmichael hunt (who was actually decent) but at 195cm.

He looked alright in the practice game yesterday. Not surprised he got given a contract.

Remember when we were going to sign Greg Ingliss

Why the hell is this guy signing some agreement with collingwood for something that may not eventuate until 3 or 4 years down the track? I dont get it?

It’s interesting isn’t it. I remember at the time this news broke last year having that exact same reaction as you.

All I can think of is that he was obviously that keen to have certainty on knowing 100% that there was a plan B in place with a club if the NBA dream doesn’t eventuate. So it benefits him in that sense and for the club (in this instance, Collingwood) they know that they aren’t competing with anyone else any more if and when he decides to come home.

You wonder how iron clad a contract like that can really be. It sounds more like something you’d sign on a napkin at a function after a few drinks or something.

But yeah, I’ve not seen or heard anything like it previously.

Its a bit like a trading Option…I wonder if AFL will approve this?

We should go around and sign up all the young BasketBall talent this way. Just in case one works out.

Will need to be looked at.

Essendon has tossed a potential lifeline to key forward Tyler Sellers, who was let go by North Melbourne after spending this year on the rookie list.

The Kangaroos signed Sellers under the SSP rule after a sparkling 2023 debut VFL season in which he booted 30 goals and ran second in the best and fairest.

The 22-year-old Old Scotch product played two AFL games last season.

At VFL level he booted another 30 goals from 15 matches, including a bag of six in Round 1 against Northern Bullants.

Standalone clubs Williamstown and Port Melbourne were among the clubs pursuing him in the past few weeks but the lure of another SSP rookie listing has taken him to the Bombers.

He’ll also sign for their VFL team, to be coached next year by Dale Tapping.

Geez. I remember watching him play in his couple of games at North this year and he looked way, way out of his depth.

One touch in game one and two in his second and final match. And he didn’t even start as the sub in either match.

For a mature age player he was miles off it.

He’d be a reasonable addition to the VFL team though perhaps but I hope we’re not considering him for our remaining list spot.

If it’s a choice between Sellers Baldwin and leave a spot for a mid season pick Iam taking the mid season pick

It a clear tactic to strengthen the VFL team and get him over. Smart move.

What it does say is Baldwin is no guarantee and that spot will be kept open all pre-season

Pre-season has only just begun for every AFL club, and the Blues are already in full swing.

Breakthrough Essendon VFL star Will Hoare will be given first crack at auditioning for a spot on the club’s AFL list when he starts as an official train-on player on Saturday.

The Pascoe Vale product will be the first of two players officially designated as train-ons, with delisted defender Kaine Baldwin to re-join the club as the other.

VFL player Tyler Sellars will continue to train with the AFL squad but he is not a designated Supplemental Selection Period (SSP) training player.

The Bombers have one spot to fill on their list after signing ex-Lion Jaxon Prior on Monday.
