The Pre-Season Supplemental Selection Period (SSP)

Bring him on as a part time coach then. No other team is taking him, there’s a reason. As much as I hate writing that.

I don’t love that reasoning because no other club has taken anyone that we would pick up with this selection. Every kid we look at has been overlooked in 2 drafts and as an SSP selection.

It’s not exactly like we’re missing the cream of the crop.

100%. Doesn’t make sense if he’s still at least 2 - 3 months away from playing. ■■■■ knows what he could break between now and then.

Is that a fact?

It’s probably harder to do that for soft cap reasons.

There’s something particularly funny about making this argument for a list spot that’s open because of an injury to Nic Martin, the player we took as a 20 year old in the SSP.

Probably fair to say that Setters doesn’t have any potential to be a 20yo Martin type selection.

I don’t disagree, I just think it’s an equally a silly proposition not to pick up Setterfield because no one else is looking at him is all.

Yes? The drafts are done, and we are late to the party getting people to train with us for the SSP period.

We have 4 non listed players training? Solly McKay, Binns, Nyko and Sellers. Looking internally at VFL crop

Serious mental gymnastics going on in here by some saying that we’ve signed Setterfield for his leadership and mentoring skills. He’s an ok tagger who plays about 8 games a season and is then injured

We do. And they have all had options previously to be drafted or SSP’d. As I said in another post. I think there are better options for our pick but just because no one else wants Setterfield is not the reason to be upset with the pick because no one else wanted anyone we could select.

He mentors and leads our injury list, which is actually bigger than our actual list.

In the last 12 months we have taken 5 state league players - Edwards, McMahon, Smartt, May and Blakiston. Last year we had one of the last picks in the 24 draft in Johnson, Cat B in Nguyen and a rookie in Day-Wicks and this year Huss a late pick and now an Irishman.

Might be at a point where we have explored a lot of speculative picks/kids and just settling on some experience with Setters isn’t the end of the world.

I think we could have looked at the market for a player. Must admit though its not horrific either if he stays for 12 months. Its not like we don’t have a huge crop that needs developing.

Gerreyn, Clarke, Johnson, Nguyen, Unwin, Kako, Day-Wicks, Sharp, Farrow, Robey, Kondogiannis, Bourke and Huss all haven’t reached age 20. Then you have players like May, Caddy, Roberts, Vigo around age 20.

So no one cant say the development team aren’t working. Its a big crop of young talent to work on. I assume its a bit on their thinking on balancing age and experience with Martin gone for 2026

It was my thought also that we already have a large number of players we’re keen to develop quickly and we don’t have infinite development resources. Setter is someone that can plug and play and won’t need much time form the coaches, he’ll just have his usual stint on the sidelines making use of the new S&C team.

It seems silly to lock anyone in now, why not have a group train for the summer and reward the best option.

If you recall, Setterfield’s delisting was the last one. It’s clear that the club was hesitant to delist him.

I misunderstood your point a bit, apologies.

Think thats a fair point. Felt that way with Edwards getting signed in April this year post ACL. See the footy landscape in Sept and then make list call
