They do realise, considering the country we live in, that absolutely nobody is going to stop calling them ‘BOM’ (“Bomb”)? It will only make people use it more and bring attention to what is sounding like a pretty petulant organisation recently.

It’s an important job and they need to be respected but this is ridiculous. Not the right way to bring any positive attention either.

They could always call themselves the Federal Bureau Of Meteorology so any future name change would be described as dropping the FBOM.

Someone thought it was a good idea and got paid 70k for that. No other instruments out there to procure for that price?

We may or may not be going to the zoo on Monday due to the thing we can’t talk about.
I need to go to the zoo, it’s my last day.

Just enjoying the sunshine before it disappears for a week.

From a distance, I agree. So do my solar panels; making money 9 weeks before solar maximum.

26.3°C in Melbourne today. Humidity hovering around 60-70% for most of the day as well.

Warmest day since April 17.

Might not seem impressive but that 26.3°C has been the highest temperature this Spring in not only Melbourne but Adelaide (25.3), Hobart (24.3), Canberra (23.0) and Sydney (25.6) as well.

If La Niña affects the Pacific, why is the western part of the US in prolonged drought? Do you have to be on our side of the Pacific?

La Niña in Australia is rain but in America it is drought. El Niño is the reverse.

This map probably gives the best insight. The warmer colours (red/orange etc) are showing where the ocean waters are warmer than average… mostly across the western Pacific. The cooler colours (blue etc) are showing where the ocean temperatures are cooler than normal… mostly across the eastern Pacific near the west coast of the US down to South America.

Warmer ocean water supports greater cloud development which of course will mean rain.

La Niña will generally reverse this to some degree.

It’s going to be a significantly cooler/colder than average start to November for large parts of Australia. The only exceptions seem to be the far Top End and North Queensland tropical coast.

14°C forecast for Melbourne on Cup Day.

Ok Melbourne peeps, get out and enjoy the sunshine today as we are going lose it for the rest of the week.

Great washing day!

Shocking Melbourne Cup Day, the worst I can remember when considering rainfall and temperature. It’s been in the high 20s and sunny the last two years.

These current conditions will be a distant memory in a few days though… a definite shift on the horizon to more usual November conditions…

The first Melbourne Cup was in 1861 - 161 years ago.

Unless there is some dramatic rise in temperature before 6pm, today has been the second coldest Melbourne Cup day on record.

  1. 1913 (11.0°C)
  2. 2022 (13.3°C)
  3. 1995 (13.6°C)
  4. 2001 (15.0°C)
  5. 2006 (15.8°C)

Global warming hey? 3 of those record cold maximums have occurred since 2000. (don’t come for me)
