Only issue pushing Brown onto the wing is how we manage the defensive side particularly with the new rules. We played well in the 2nd half of last year playing full ground defensive pressure. And if you play Stewart or Brown up forward (Or JD) they can easily push up to the wing to provide that link.
Can’t say I’m up to speed on the new rules, I immediately switch off anything to do with AFL hierarchy, can’t help it. Does it beg the question why are we talking about the need for ‘outside run’? McKenna and Saad provide plenty of linking play from back and I’m sure Redman is in consideration for utility type, Ridley too. Martin would’ve been sweet but we’ve got it covered with Zaka, McGrath (the forgotten man), and Long (depth) if he can switch off the game of Candy Crush in his head for five minutes . Get Hind for good depth if not.
Didn’t someone recently suggest a ban for anyone who posts Ricky Nixon’s drug-addled inanities? I’d like to echo those sentiments. 100%…
Why would the new rules change anything for wingers?
You got better though.
I didn’t, though.

There’s still time HM.
Gleeson, Redman and Ridley could all be potentials for this role as well. Guelfi, Parish and Mutch can all go through that position as well, although it doesn’t maximise their strengths
I’ve not seen the new rules in action. But would have thought the starting positions would make it easier for guys to get separation from slower opponent upon restarts. And that capacity for guys to close down space and defend the ground if the opposition gets the ball will be more important. I’m not saying a taller player can’t play that role.
But if Brown starts on the wing against someone who can run off him, the opponent wins the clearance, and his opponent gets on the end of it, that would be the problem I’d foresee. You no longer have the extra number coming off the back of the square to push up and close down that space.
This is why I see an emphasis on those running types who can create separation, and run both ways. I’m sure teams will generate strategies to combat the rules. But ultimately there will be more space to start with.
Isaac Smith was part of the trial and said he all of a sudden had more room/less congestion to run around on wings as a result.
For the endurance runners it works in their favour
Unfortunately his sensitivity vs specificity wasn’t good though
My initial post about Brown was posited on something I thought I read about him having some considerable ?tow? (cue pic of a large toe) and excellent endurance. Unless I’ve mucked up they would be good attributes for a winger.
Look I may be seriously underestimating his capacity to run, and at decent pace. I just don’t see Brown as being able to put in the repeat efforts and defensive running required. I like the idea of versatility and taking advantage of mismatches, and of that scenario arises and Brown performs well then bonus.
But a player in the mould of Isaac Smith, Brad Hill, (Fit) Scully would seem better suited if the rule changes work the way they’re supposed to.
Brown is in the top few for distance covered in most games he played forward.
Currently on sen

Very good distance runner, but would lack the acceleration you need to play on a wing.
Had a listen, gives the vibe he could fit in at most clubs except the one coached by Ross.
Sounds like a great bloke and a good fit for us
