Trade talk - from August 2024

Gold coast suns is one of the worst run organisations out there…I mean giving away Jack Bowes plus pick 7. ludicrous.

Its the equivelant to giving an apprentice his living away from home allowance one day 1 of the job and he has a big night and pis*** it up against the wall. Then cries poor.

Geez…we’re really stretching things now. I’m not sure how the mindset of members affects the clubs performance.

And this is where you are wrong

In the last 10 years, 15 clubs have played in a Preliminary final atleast once.

The only 3 clubs who haven’t are Us, Gold Coast and St. Kilda.

Equalisation is giving all clubs an opportunity to get near a Grand final. It’s still up to the clubs to get there and perform it.

Except they haven’t won have they…there has to be 2 teams at the end, yet the same teams keep on winning.

Is there a way to distinguish this thread to actual trade talk/announcements and not repeat other threads.

Our list is ■■■■.
Apart from some clappers that’s the consensus.

Troy or Adam?

it’s not that we think he will have the same sort of career as selwood, because he went to a well run club and was developed within that system, but his playstyle is similar and similar skillset.

however despite being a good side, geelong didn’t play selwood on a half forward flank til he was deemed “ready” to play midfield. he was backed in nd grew into the player he became.

with hobbs, they don’t back him in, shove him in the forwardline and go well he will get there someday, lets back in shiel and co to do what they do best, finish mid table.

Again, I’m a fan of Hobbs. I want to see him play as a midfielder in the AFL side.

But, he does not have a similar skillset to Joel Selwood. If he did, he would not be thrown on a flank for game time, he’d be our first picked midfielder.

FYI if we let Parish go last year, we wouldn’t have gotten what Rich are getting for Baker/Rioli types via a trade - it would’ve been FA compo at pick 12.

Massimo is a weak tackler who shuns physical contact and is terrible above his head. Those attributes make him a defensive liability. He is a 100% outside receiver who can run and carry and distribute the ball well. That’s it. He isn’t even that quick. But he makes good decisions and backs himself to execute. He is not a half back flankers a*hole.

Redman can take contested marks and is not afraid of contact or making tackles. By his standards he had a poor year but he has had to adjust his role being changed due to Scott mucking around with Martin on a half back flank (which simply did not work) and also having to help a backline missing Ridley and Reid for much of the year. I’d take Redman in my backline every day over Massimo and it’s not even close.

That’s all true and fine, but if someone’s going to say “I worry about trading him” they could perhaps pick a player comparison that isn’t one of the most decorated players of the modern game. There must be a similar player from the last decade that doesn’t bring the reputational baggage of being a 350 game, 6xAA, 4 x premiership player generally regarded as one of the best leaders and captains in the league at the most consistently high performing team of the last 20 years. “I’m worried about trading him, could end up like Ben Cunnington” might communicate the point more clearly.

This is such an ignorant view of academies. They’re in place to develop talent in non-football states, along with focusing on indigenous and first generation talent (which is at an all time low) via pathways.

We probably would have matched the offer and forced a trade, because we were pretty clearly committed to getting McKay, which would have cancelled out any compo. Which would have been a bold play with a guy who seemingly didn’t want to leave and wasn’t attracting massive offers.

Geelong never bottomed out but they were absolutely blessed in the timing of some of their list management. They started their rebuild in the early 2000s and by the time they actually peaked in 2007 they had just drafted two generational talents in Selwood and Hawkins that played on for another 17 seasons.

It meant when the older brigade started to decline they still had two absolute superstars in their prime to help attract more talent in their prime, ie Dangerfield, Cameron. I don’t doubt they are an impeccably run club but gee whiz they have been blessed as well with father son selections at critical times.

It will come crashing down eventually, Dangerfield, Cameron, Bliczavs, Hawkins (already retired) can’t play forever.

Richmond do not have any young superstars coming through to help make them an attractive proposition right now and their hand has been forced with key senior players jumping ship.

Is the trade week forum name due for an update? How about:

its like this every year, draft thread is loosely about drafting with a sprinkling of list needs.

dodoro thread is the truther thread.

list management is the more articulate draft thread.

trade thread is general list management of the entire industry, and as nothing can actually happen for 2 months a chronicle of whos gone where wont be of use.

You think if he was Geelong bound Smith would have announced them as his preferd club. Will probably still end up there but not as first thought might still be gettable Dogs would love our pick 8 perfect Stringer replacement

BAILEY SMITH

Less than 72 hours after his side’s season-ending loss to the Hawks, the superstar on-baller has officially requested a trade from The Kennel. His want to move was as far from a surprise as any player in recent memory, but there was one big catch - he didn’t nominate a club of preference. Geelong were at ultra-short odds to be named his preferred destination of choice, but Hawthorn and Collingwood had also been linked much earlier in the year for his services. Whether or not Smith (and perhaps the Bulldogs) have intentionally kept his preference undisclosed by design remains to be seen, but make no doubt that the Bulldogs will want adequate compensation for their Pick 7 in the 2018 Draft. If not Geelong, where?!

Geelong usually keep it low key until their seasons done, then they’ll greenlight list managers to propaganda their players way to geelong

Still shouldn’t stop us from having a crack we can offer Dogs a better pick

Filling the void of ex-Bulldog leaving club on questionable terms?

Because otherwise, I don’t really see them as like-for-like players.
