Trade talk - from August 2024

Smith is a match winner

I think AFL players have a history of not nominating until their club of choice is no longer in contention; something to do with etiquette! Now that Hawthorn have Barass and Battle to get done I’m not sure Smith would be on their radar…you never know though!!

I think he’s Geelong bound…looks like they get another good one for peanuts! Pick 15-20, maybe a future 1st or 2nd as well or a ā– ā– ā– ā–  player who seemingly plays well for Geelong but will turn to custard once they leave (a la Tim Kelly style)!

Yet Redman is rated one of the worst in the league in 1v1 contests. So realistically he is just as big a defensive liability

I did say he had a ā– ā– ā– ā–  year didn’t I?
Plus our backline was doghsit in the back half of the year with what? 3 or 4 of our defenders making that list? If Massimo played in our backline this year I’ll guarantee he’d make the top 5 too!

if we cant get him make Geelong cough up we put our pick 8 on the table to Dogs

No he’s really not. He’s a 3rd-5th best mid with questionable attitude, off-field issues & coming off a knee reco. He is NOT the player we should be chasing for our needs. The most essington thing I can think of atm is having not paid 2 x 1st rounders for Dunkley, the player we needed, we now stump up that price for an inferior player in Smith. Hard pass.

So give up pick 8 for Smith and play him where? On a wing? Instead of Duursma? Or Roberts? Or El-Hawli? Do you think Bailey Smith is what we need? I’m sorry but I’d be ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā–  ropeable if the club did that! So should you too by the way!

That will happen in time. He hasn’t requested a trade to just go anywhere, Smith knows exactly where he wants to go.

That’s why he has requested a trade.

I would put Roberts in Kelly or Heppels spot not on the wing

He’s marketable and hot, hes a pretty average overhyped footballer.

giving up picks for him would be an abject failure of list management

That’s fair enough if you reckon Roberts’ future is at half back but would you really want to spend pick 8 on Smith? That’s a lot of draft capital for a winger!

Nino just wants a shiny new toy and loves the sweet, sweet nectar of that 10th placed finish.

Probably doesn’t want to announce whilst Cats are still in finals.

I’m opposite. I’d trade out what we can; get as much draft capital as possible and start turning the list over a bit. Even if it’s not 1st rounders…■■■■ it coz this list ain’t taking us to the promised land! Only a few years before Tassie team too. Not sure Scott will be that adventurous but for him the clock is ticking now.

23 and a proven talent would still have 10 years left of footy plenty of time to be part of our next succesfull side not sure how getting Smith would be a hindrance

Because we have bigger needs than a bloke who can only play wing

Because I’m not sure he’s filling an obvious need for us. Wingers and midfielders are not in short supply at Essendon; in fact a lot of trade discussion is centred on how we can trade out one or two of them to help bring in some draft capital!

The only players we should be looking at are free agents such as Isaac cumming, or alternatively, small forwards looking for more opportunities such as Rosas and Sam Wicks

Aside from that, I’d be looking pretty hard at SANFL, WAFL and VFL level to see who’s a cheap half back/small forward option

That goes against the narrative tho we aren’t allowed to trade for anyone it’s gut the list and trade for picks!

I would happily trade any one of mcgrath, parish, Langford or Draper to attain more picks in the first round
