Trade talk - from August 2024

Trigger explains his weight gain

Yup heaps of risk, no doubt. But I reckon if a club like Freo, carlton, Bulldogs come sniffing and they go from being 5-8 sides to top 4. I reckon it’s a risk worth taking for that kind of club

you must have been reding posts with eye on shut on this forum then, potentially 2 cos there were a few people questioning why are they bringing him on, on that amount of coin without having proven himself.

The old “you must gain 10kgs through the course of the season to trigger another year” clause

If Trac leaves I think the Hawks will have a dip - they’d be a top 3 team and a real premiership threat next year with him

I think they have already committed to other players this trade period.

Playear earns his extra year by hitting Performance based trigger

Whats he earnt?

These triggers are always going to be pretty easily attainable otherwise no player would sign up to them or see them as any value.

They will only exist to protect the club from a worst case scenario like if stringer suffered a long term injury and wasn’t able to play the season out.

It would be advantageous for a club to throw a player an extra game or two if it meant they hit the trigger and they wanted to keep them, as opposed to letting them miss the trigger then having the parties need to renegotiate another deal entirely separately.

Triggers are not the solution to anything. It works in the commercial world because they save you the requirement to go through lengthy and costly tendering/ renegotiation processes but not in a sports sense where player deals can be hashed out after a couple of weeks of involved and astute discussion, often bearing no cost on either party, in my opinion.

I’d be surprised if the best clubs have players on triggers or utilise them as broadly as we do. A good club would trust in their ability to retain players at contract expiration and be comfortable that they don’t need triggers to attract players either.

If shiel has hit a trigger for another year then it goes to show just how soft they are.

Seen a lot of people say Trac will struggle to get back to his best because of his injuries, i bet he’s AA in 2025. Mans a killer, no cap.

How much worse is Petracca’s injury than Lloyd’s in 96? Certainly didn’t affect his career negatively.

Lets get Oliver!
I reckon Zach would get in his ear and get the best out of him.

Petracca leaves Melbourne, in the same calendar year Brayshaw is forced to retire and Oliver loses his ■■■■ - they would need another mature seasoned midfielder to replace him. Yes they are crying out for a big strong leading forward, but effectively losing one of the best midfield trio in the space of 12 months, I think they will be needing a midfield bull moreso than a goofy McKay twin…

Is there any news on Hobbs, Tsatas or Shiel? No point keeping them all. Would get rid of Shiel and 1 of Hobbs or Tsatas just because we need draft capital to balance this cluster ■■■■ of a list Dodo left us.

It wouldn’t be a trade week without Essendon talk - any news? Blitzers are usually pretty good!

As others have said, we don’t have enough draft picks to overhaul the list…

So we need to snag a diamond-in-the-rough from other clubs’ reserves/offcasts. Yes, blah blah Massimo…but now we need to find one of our own.

There are plenty of examples: Keays, Hinge, Ah Chee, Markov, Jordan Clark, Sharp, Jordon, Stocker, Wood, Bramble, Duryea, etc…

The teams to look at? Brisbane/Sydney/WB have deep lists IMO? GC always dump some value?
