The hawks list is underrated. They have recruited tough and skillful players off the half back line, as well as small forwards. The sudden surge up the ladder is a result of maturity and good system, but the system only works with the right players.
You give Mitchell the Essendon list of ■■■■ kicks and his system fails.
I don’t disagree completely. But very few of the hawks recruits were high class at other clubs. Massimo, chol, Amon, Ginnivan, meek even battle. They were largely pushed out of their clubs to an extent but have proven pivotal for the hawks. Whilst list management has a role in that obviously we are either saying that Collingwood, Essendon, port, freo, Gold Coast are all low on capability from a list management perspective or there is something else at hawthorn (eg culture and system).
To your point around if you give Essendons list to the hawthorn hierarchy and they would fail. I’d say potentially not as good but not fail. If you give hawthorns list to us we still would be mid level club at best.
I’ll go back to, the differentiating factor between clubs in the hawthorn example is not list management it’s system and culture
Particularly in the case of Amon, Massimo and ginnivan.
What’s happening at the moment is because the hawks machine appears to be working well, lazy journalists have reframed the narrative that somehow every player who lands there is some diamond in the rough type that their prior clubs misjudged.
We haven’t won a final in 21 years, what’s your point exactly, oh they haven’t won a grand final since they started rebuilding, yeah well again we haven’t even won a final in 21 years.
My point is I think everyone needs to cool their jets…right now Hawthorn look very good but the season has just begun and there’s a lot of water to go under the bridge. They haven’t won a thing yet.
