Trade talk - from October 2024 (Part 7)

Not if you need to win 8-10 more matches a year to be premiership material and he might help us win an actual 3-4.

Don’t you need to win 3-4 on the way to eventually winning 8-10?

And the idea is that we want young talent to drive the wins (which means both Reid/butters/rowell or draftees tick that box in the same way)

I feel maybe I’ve missed something here.

I’m a bit over Geelong just getting great players all the time.

Drop down the ladder like everyone else for a spell.

Isn’t that also where we think/hope great players are?!

If Harley does barrack for Geelong, they are into him and they have cap space.

Theres now way he doesn’t end up there imho.

Which sucks.

Come to bomberland Harley!

Blitzers against getting Reid are generally against it for one or both of two reasons.

  1. The gap between us and a premiership is too big (i.e. we’ve too many holes) for one player to bridge the gap. It would be better to take the picks and try to fill multiple gaps while finishing lower and getting more good picks.
  2. It’s a huge investment in a single player who could get injured, Essingtoned, or just generally fail to be as good as currently projected.

Most think he’ll improve the side. Many however think he won’t improve the side enough and there are better strategies.

It sounds like the options tabled are:

Plug more holes now and get potential gun later

Or

Get potential gun now and plug more holes later

I know people will dive into the minutiae but I’m not sure those two options are dramatically different in reality.

I do understand the essington’d fear though.

Dangerfield will retire and personally hand over his number 35 guernsey to Harley and you will like it :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

Now do the Adelaide game

LDU staying with Norf till 2032

There’s a bit of Dylan Shiel about LDU I reckon. Real smooth mover from stoppage and looks a million bucks… but equally he does butcher the footy a lot. Also is good for a short to medium term injury or two a season. To be fair, on a good day he can look unreal. Not too fussed he’s staying at North.

LDU signs a 7 year extension at Norf

Agree. I’ve never really been impressed with LDU. Everything says is a powerful big, bodied mid but I’ve never really seen him display the apparent strength he has.

There’s absolutely a way he doesn’t end up there. West Coast make him fulfil his contract. If the deal isn’t good enough you can absolutely guarantee they take this approach…they don’t really have much to lose.

Except losing him for nothing the next year to Richmond / North in PSD, or the risk of that meaning needing to accept less on a trade when he is OOC next year

This literally never happens bar two examples in the modern era (Ball and Martin - both very different scenarios to this) and there’s no way in good faith his manager would allow him to walk and not get anything back for WC after they committed to taking him pick 1 three years earlier.

I agree with post above, WC would be out of their mind to let Harley go this year unless they get a kings ransom and it won’t be possible coming from Geelong and a lesser extent Hawthorn.

If Reid really wants out this year then we are still very much in play.

Go ask a dogs supporter how they feel about Bailey Smith tearing it up at the cattery, and Macrae (saints) and even Caleb Daniel (North) have had a good start elsewhere.

Can we please just get Stevens from Geelong if they have no plans to play him in his first one and a half years?

Probably not too upset.

Freijah has looked decent in the middle, Sam Davidson has been great on a wing, and Riley Sanders is getting good onball minutes.

You only need to look at FarkCarlton relying solely on Cripps to win games to show a valid concern that we might follow the same path and put all our resources into getting one person to rule them all.
