Trade talk - from October 2024 (Part 7)

Come on man Handballs McKay, Gresham, we shell out for the big name big game performers

I’d call that temporary depth. I think he is basically drapers backup as the ruck-forward in a 2 ruck setup with Goldstein being Bryan’s backup in the same set up. however, there aren’t any guarantees that we stay with a 2 ruck system should we lose one of our top 2.

I don’t think any Ruckman who is a 3rd choice option has a long term viability.

They’re either young and will eventually leave for opportunities…… or they’re old and will eventually retire in a year or 2.

The point I’m making about Wright, he has a long term contract and can be a back up for both FF and Ruck.

Name a better 3rd choice Ruckman at another club?

Houston’s awesome and twice the player of McKay.

That being said the rest of our list is behind Ports. I don’t think he was a good match for Essendon.

Easy sell for Collingwood who have a more mature list ready for a tilt.

McKay is meant to be there as a rock to build our defence around I think - he ain’t no match winner though.

And didnt cost us draft captial we would have tp trade pick 9 for Houston on top of this miss out Kako becuase we dont have currency to bid

2MP may also find that 53 goal a year form again.

It’s also on record I think isn’t it he has had shoulder issues? Thats why he had that problematic marking technique.

Not sure how shoulder issues translates into number 3 ruck

It’s hilarious that Barham says to us that ā€œ20 years of shortcuts hasn’t workedā€ and Brad was ā€œselflessā€ for not saying he wanted to trade for Houston - then the result is Brad will end up playing a shortcut in Shiel at halfback instead

The difference is that Shiel is already on the List, and evidently had a contract for 1 more year.

We have to pay him anyway.

Houston would have compromised our short term draft strategy.
He likely still has plenty of good football ahead of him, though it feels the right move for us to pass.

Houston didn’t come for free.

I obviously haven’t seen him at SANFL level, but he ticks a lot of boxes (height, disposal, decent speed), there has been a big queue for HB positions at Port and he’d be cheap. A little like Prior.

Obviously depends on how guys like Clarke progress.

That is a cop out.

That pretty much sums 2MP up.

ain’t gonna happen.

If Bryan goes down, assume Wright plays forward/ruck and Draper moves into the ruck.
If Draper goes down then Wright just takes his spot.

If Both Draper and Bryan go down then Goldstein to ruck with Wright forward.

That is pretty decent ruck coverage IMO.

It’s overkill

It is overkill at the moment with the 2 young guys not AFL ready yet.

Our ruck division could look very different next year.

Assume Goldstein retires, 2MP will be moved on.

Vigo should be ready for some games, Gerreyne won’t be ready until his tank is g2g.

And it’s not impossible that either Draper or Bryan gets tempted by the right offer, especially if the tandem ruck doesn’t work out.

Assume they stay. And the two olds don’t.

Draper and Bryan in the 22. With Vigo in the wings and Gerreyne carrying the drinks. Somewhat thin but with the flexibility of playing with 1 ruckman.

If Draper or Bryan leaves.

We’d have to look at Duff-Tytler in the 1st round as a mobile Ruck/Forward. Which would leave us with 1x AFL ruck, Vigo, and 2 that are 12 months away. Meaning we’d likely need to keep 2MP around or rely on Langford/Jones/Cox to make up the ruck.

Yeah agree. It might be slightly overs right now but it will be rectified and be more balanced next year once we see player development and we know what we have.

He won’t kick 53 again but watch how much better he (if he gets a game) and our other forwards will look now that we are moving the ball quickly instead of this slow chip kick sideways out of defence ā– ā– ā– ā–

Really like JUH.
Isn’t he a little too similar to Caddy ?

Feel like we will be distracted with 1 or 2 other targets.
