Trade talk - from October 2024 (Part 7)

Not necessarily, we’ve seen this play out several times. Player is contracted and the club doesn’t budge or accept.

You don’t roll over for a number one draft pick. Especially if its to a top 6 team.

Which is their right.

But there are examples of letting a player go, too.

But this is Reid, it’s a unique circumstance. If he wants to get to your club you find a way to do it.

A couple of late picks and fringe players wont do it WC will hang up the phone.

Only way WC accpet Geelongs offer if they add a best 22 player to the first round picks or trade that player for a top 10 pick

Cats can offer up three first round picks straight up, before any other trades etc.

It’s a solid base. They could do it.

Trading Max Holmes, Dempsey and O’Sullivan is do-able, do they want to off load these players for picks for Harley? Does Harley want the Cats to weaken their team to do it.

Picks the cats have or prospected to have won’t get it done.

For a WCE POV Geelong is probably the worst team to have to deal with re capital they have to offer (willing to offer)

They could but it will be very hard

Those picks are all likely to be in the teens. It’s probably worth the risk to hold onto Harley another year and try for a better deal.

It all comes down to which club Reid wants to go to. Whoever he chooses will make it happen.

And with every club making a play for him it’s hard to imagine he will choose us.

They have to deal with Mackie who’s on par with Dodoro

More like Tony Conway and a second round pick or two to upgrade to a late first. Use that with pick 12 to move up the order (or something like that)

Add future firsts, maybe Brad Close too.

That’s getting there.

Another year of him returning to pre season over weight, and stinking it up for 12 months?

Yeah nah, his value drops. They will take the offer imo.

Definitely can’t see this Harley Reid discussion getting tedious.

With the history of both his concussion and our medical team’s record, best we stay away from Starcevich.
And a big no to JUH. Yes he has amazing talent but the club is is not positioned to deal with his issues.
Harley would be worth the risk IMO. Young and his best is what we desperately need. There is always risk chasing players like this.

Come on! an injured ruckman and a half fwd? Nah.

He is worth 2 top 10 picks and then a cherry on top.

Their picks will be in the 20s this year (they finish top 4 with their home ground draw) with the academy’s that pick is now in the mid 20’s

Next year’s first is late teens at best if Reid and Worpel join the cats, they only get stronger

and 2027 F1 in a Tassie compromised draft, that pick will not be accepted by WCE.

I agree.

Once everything is said and done, thats what I reckon Cats will be able to offer. Just because Geelong don’t have that offer now doesn’t mean they won’t when it’s trade time.

But there will be moving parts involving bit part players.

I didn’t say Conway to the Eagles and Close for Reid. Just that players like that will be involved to jig around and get the picks.

Again, they wouldn’t be asking the question if they didn’t think they could do it.

The Cats are not Dodoro. After everything we have seen, thinking the Cats wouldn’t get it done seems a bit naive.

Cats will offer only an annual Christmas card signed by Chris Scott and get the deal done on Day 1.
Harley has ‘i want quick success’ written in CAPS on the back of his jumper.

I think we’ll go all in at the draft.

I think if we pitch him the generous leave package Essendon offers, a guaranteed break commencing in late August or early September, we can convince him to move here.

Geelong can’t offer that.

The other thing here is…do the Cats want him?

They will know they need to give up a lot and shift the earth to make the deal happen.

Maybe its just much better value and easier for them to get Oliver, JUH and/or Worpel?

I can see a reality where Geelong says they’re already committed to other blokes.

I really can’t see any team preferring Oliver and JUH and their associated baggage over Reid.

Do you honestly think they wouldn’t?

They would be absolutely neck deep, because that’s what they do.
