I’d have tried to slightly tailor it. Hustwaite out, and instead either a FF2, or a FF2 ==> FF1 upgrade. Since I don’t think we need him and don’t have the list spots.
But otherwise yes. I’d have preferred the original deal with #9 and the picks they gave up for #20 as well. We could have then traded to Carlton for #20 directly, if we’d actually got things done in time.

As the club stated many times, they were after players rather than just picks. I think rejigging any deal to exclude the only Hawk player coming the other way is not realistic given what the club clearly wants.

Well, they clearly didn’t want him. And I was talking from the perspective of whether I’d accept the deal. I was saying I’d prefer to switch him for something equivalent. But the general level of compensation Hawks were offering was acceptable. Or acceptable enough to take at the last minute.

Yeah that’s where I would’ve gone with the 27 first, if there’d be time to negotiate it.
We give our 27 2nd for their 27 first. Would’ve been a slight pick upgrade

Yep. When they made their first offer IMO we should have gone back and said “drop Hustwaite, add FF1, everything else is good”. If they push back on that, offer our FF3 as well. And be willing to settle on FF2.
Strengthen the 2025, 2026 and 2027 draft hands, open up an additional list spot. But it sounds like we hardly negotiated at all, and they went off and did that silly deal with Carlton to “get an extra first rounder”.
Hawks did a similar screw up with the O’Meara trade, where Gold Coast would have preferred what they gave to St Kilda than the pick they did trade.

Then I would probably do the deal and they could have kept 22.
Keeping 22 handy for Hawks as they get to still take a “first rounder” at the draft
Both parties could have probably been happy with that.
Now show it with actual pick numbers, do it with projecting hawks finishing top 4 next 2 years, compromised draft this year and the 11 first rd picks tassie have in 27 please

But the point is cashing Merrett In and bringing in 3-4 kids together and also forcing Brad to reinvigorate the midfield with youth. Plus Boost our draft hand for future drafts, and get set for
2026 draft - Justice NGA
2027 draft - Bewick F/S + Darwish NGA, Rodan NGA
It also likely means we finish lower next year in the last uncompromised draft and thus get a earlier pick in 2026.

Can we stop the bullshit that they didn’t have the draft capital to get it done. They were made an offer, and rejected it.
It wasn’t us that had responsibility to open discussions, it was them.
It wasn’t us that was giving ultimatums and deadlines, it was them.
It wasn’t us that knocked back the final trade, it was them.
It wasn’t us that stopped negotiating and gave up on the trade happening, it was them.
It wasn’t us that didn’t achieve what we wanted this trade period, it was them.
While we may strongly disagree with keeping Zach given his tantrum, the manner in which we conducted these negotiations were completely inline with a club that did not wish to make a trade.

No matter how you slice it, when one party is not motivated to move either one of 2 things happen, you get a stalemate or one party concedes ground. Clearly no one conceded.
Above all this was all completely predictable.
Why do people keep saying that we had no use for mid/late teens/early 20s picks?
Unless I’m mistaken we have 3 list spots. 4 if Zach goes.
And 6 or 7 by delisting LL/WS/BH (I would keep Hobbs).
Pick 5, 6, 10, 21, 22, 27, 30
There’s 7 in, 7 out, and that’s assuming we can’t a) bundle picks to move up or b) auction off picks mid-draft when clubs get itchy to grab someone that slides (especially our first two).

I’m still laughing about Dermott arrogantly proclaiming (and chuckling) that the Hawks had the whip hand. No Dermott. He has no idea about negotiations and he underestimated Welsh. The Hawks thought they’d be dealing with a board led by Uncle Arthur.
