No Melbourne Cup Day holiday in Bendigo. Instead they have Bendigo Cup Day, which is the second Tuesday of November. In Castlemaine, it’s a mixed bag : some companies have Melbourne Cup Day, but a few have Bendigo Cup Day instead.
Melbourne Cup Day was not a holiday at Catholic Schools as well. RC Schools were closed for All Saints Day on November 1st or the Monday after if it fell on a weekend.
My career at CBC ended two days after the 1964 Melbourne Cup. My Dad took me to the Cup on what was a school day, so I got detention the next day for being away without a note from a Parent. Dad took me to school the next day, and after a brief meeting with the Head Brother, allegedly the Brother received a fist to the nose, and I was off to the local High School.
Melb Uni had exams at Showgrounds on Cup Day when I was a student. It’s pretty deflating hearing the roar of the crowd when you’re about to start a 3 hour exam.
I was at Melb Uni and had an exam in the Exhibition Building at the top of town on Cup Day. Missing The Cup was of no consequence to me (didn’t give a rat’s tossbag about it then, and still don’t…) The only deflating things about it were a) not getting a holiday, and b) quickly realising during the 10-minutes reading time that I didn’t have a hope in hell of cobbling together even 50%.
It was a poxy little third-year subject I’d done to make up the necessary points for my degree, so I could get the hell out of tertiary study forever. The lectures were on at 8 am though which I considered far too early. I figured I’d get by using a fellow student’s notes (hey, I only needed 50% right?) It worked… badly. He was a poor note-taker…
I think I only had exams in the Exhibition in first year. Went into the honours stream second year and class sizes weren’t big enough to need the Exhibition. I think a few may have been in Wilson Hall though.
