US politics - fried (part 5)

Let’s all agree that it’s pathetic that America cannot come up with two better presidential candidates than Trump and Biden. Oh and that Trump is the last person you would want in the White House .

All that is of course true.

But why did you hold off about all the other crap things he has done?

One of the things that interests me is what the Howard government knew around the war in Iraq. It is now well established that Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld lied to get a coalition to take part in the Iraq war.
How much did Howard know? If ASIO didn’t know it was all subterfuge then they aren’t worth the taxpayer dollars. If Howard knew the war was built on lies he should be hauled before a court and tried.

A number of posters have passed opinion that Biden is too old to run for President again and have questioned his ability to be an effective president if he is re-elected - Some have been restrained in their criticism while others have been more full blown in their criticisms - But to suggest that because a poster gives Biden a nickname ‘Dopey’ and they are accused of supporting MAGA and Trump support is stretching credibility or to be blunt sheer lunacy.

I am trying to understand how an individual can be awarded 83 million in damages for past suffering/abuse - Not many people earn 83 million in their lifetime, so I am wondering how the judge can arrive at that figure - I’ll add that there would be many, many, many similar cases that could go to court - Would they receive a similar figure?

The jury arrived at that figure, not the judge. IIRC the initial amount was less than $30m.

Speculating here, but factors taken into consideration would have been Trump’s recent boast of having $400m in liquidity, his thinly-veiled threats to the plaintiff, jury and witnesses, and his boorishness when taking the stand.

I didn’t want my post to be longer than the thread.

Noting that the payout was as much for his trashing her reputation, and his constant attacks, via X (Twitter) even while he was in the courtroom, may have also had something to do with it. If I’m a jury member deciding whether a defendant should be punished for defaming a person they had already been found guilty of raping, and the defendant is continuing to defame the person, even while I am hearing evidence against him, I don’t think I would take that as a sign of remorse on their behalf, and would most likely want to slap them down even harder to emphasise that they are a piece of garbage.

It was for defamation, not past suffering or abuse. And the dopey prick was tweeting defamatory comments about her during the trial, which the prosecuting attorneys submitted as evidence. Trump is literally too stupid to know he is stupid.

According to my VERY limited understanding of the legal issues involved, the great majority of the amount was ‘punitive damages’.

As the name suggests, punitive damages are awarded to punish the perpetrator rather than compensate the victim.

I’m pretty sure Australia has never had an inquiry into our partition the Iraq war, unlike both the USA and UK. Rudd/Gillard should have 100% kicked one off.

And the jury was asked to consider what amount might actually stop someone as rich as Trump from continuing to do what he was doing.

It may well get reduced on appeal, but I wouldn’t know what the prospects of that are. But if he appeals I read that he has to front the full amount.

100% agree. Trump had no real effect on the life of many except Americans. In fact, during his time my business in US was stronger than ever. COVID had the massive negative effect not Trump.

Trump just lost to an 80 year old.

Not sure about ASIO
But wasn’t Andrew Wilkie an Army intelligence officer that went public that there were no weapons of mass destruction and the war was based on a lie. Time has certainly proved him correct.

The recently released Cabinet papers refer to Howard giving an oral briefing to Cabinet on WMD in connection with the decision to join the Coalition of the Willing.

He resigned, didn’t he?

Then the Howard Govt started backgrounding conservative media about alleged “personal issues” to discredit him. Was a complete disgrace.
