US politics - fried (part 5)

I am having trouble deciding whether US politics is more soap opera, circus or game show. As to Biden and Trump, both need to be replaced by a younger person. I get the feeling that the party who changes to a younger leader will win in 2024, but leadership change in one will probably precipitate change in the other.

Never underestimate the delusional power of the MAGA Chris

It is only because Biden is so demented and hopeless that this race is actually on and Trump has any chance of returning to the White House. Even the most rusted on Democrats must wince in fear and hold their breath every time they see Biden on the TV or approaching a lectern . Now, because he’s prone to do or say anything, he’s actually starting to become dangerous. That now makes two dangers!

Ridicule Trump until the cows come home. Do whatever legal or distraction campaign necessary to ensure he either doesn’t run, or he doesn’t win. However, as long as Biden is the Dems choice, Trump is a chance… And that says it all.

Only in America they say. What a choice we’re presented with.

You have got that completely backwards.

The only reason why Biden will win is because he is up against the most polarised politician in history. Biden will beat Trump in 2024 by a huge margin, just like 2020. After that the Dems will switch their focus to the younger Newsom

Trump and majority of Trump backed Republicans have not won a single thing since 2016.

I’m not convinced. I reckon a Labrador would be more effective than Biden, certainly so if ā€˜spot’ has a good Press Secretary!

Biden might be senile and maybe he is ā€œThe Big Guyā€ but for me at least he’s a statesman (albeit past his use by date). Trump is bordering on senile and he’s crazy and is definitely not a statesman- but his poll numbers keep going up. It’s bizarre in the US. The situation is so volatile we could have Biden wining in 2024, Trump winning, Trump in jail winning, Trump in jail and not winning, or we could have two new candidates winning

Don’t confuse Biden’s speech impediment with dementia.

Biden has been incredible effective at passing legislation and actually doing things for the American people. The fact that you focus on his stutter and his age means you don’t actually care what he has done.

If it is so important, take a look at Trumps speeches. The guy doesn’t make a single bit of sense and is encroaching on 80 years old himself…

I believe the polls are skewed to show it being closer. Look at all the election results since 2016, Dems way outperformed vs polls. The recent elections were a show of that.

Anti Abortion and Trump are poison to Republicans and they are stuck with Trump until the day he dies

Anything could happen. I shake my head when I see Biden on TV. Nothing against Biden, he’s chronically ill and deteriorating before our eyes. However, the President was always revered, respected and had a real presence. His demise medically almost parallels with the decline of the Superpower. Watching him this week with Xi and other dignitaries, it was stark and really highlighted to me how America / the office of President have declined so markedly.

Agree on Trump. I really don’t want him to win. He’s dangerous…. But in s honesty, it shouldn’t have got to this.

You don’t remember Reagan, do you.
Or the many, many other world leaders who stayed in power well past their best without affecting the idea of their nations’s ā€˜strength’ at all.
This particular obsession is your own.

I don’t agree. Biden is another level bad. If he weren’t President, you’d be having convos with an at home care plans. He’s not fit for President.

Not what I’m seeing of Biden in public presentations. The occasional slip which is easily rectified.

You can disagree all you like.
There was so much fear of Reagan having his ā€˜finger on the button’ when you wouldn’t trust him to put his pants on the right way in the morning.
That’s just a fact. He was far, far worse than Biden.
We can go on to other nations that portrayed strength and were effective despite having an elder leader if you like.

No need, this is the US Politics thread.

Anyway, the sooner the Dems can find a way to move him and Harris aside, the sooner we can put Trump aside imo. We really need new, fresh and younger blood on both sides to contest the leadership race. The current respective candidates (Biden / Trump) might well just be the best of a really poor batch.

I don’t think many people disagree with that.
The idea that these two are the best the USA can offer is…disturbing, but really just a symptom of other issues.

Imagine Franklin Roosevelt in today’s politics. Restricted to a wheelchair due to polio. The guy looked like death warmed up when he won his fourth term in office.

Fark me…you’re so damn blinkered.

You rail against Biden because your extensive medical knowledge tells you that he is

even though he has been one of the most effective presidents in recent times.

Nobody has done more harm to the status of President than Trump.

If you cannot see that, you’re clearly not looking very hard.

He was lucky to get a fourth term. If the Willie D had been more accurate he wouldn’t have had the chance.

While I think that Biden’s decline is overstated, the concerns of @dmaplestone are representative of a decent portion of the electorate.

Biden’s age is a real problem. There are statistically valid concerns about mental decline over the coming 5 years.

I’ve said previously that I see Biden as the most effective president of the past 20 years, but that doesn’t mean he’s the best option for the next election. I’d prefer him to open the door for a replacement.
