Trump and his people don’t lie in the expectation they’re going to fool anyone, though some people will be filled by ANY bullshit imaginable.
They lie to demonstrate power. Their allies have to pretend to believe the lies and are made complicit, their opponents have their noses rubbed in the fact of their powerlessness and are made to despair, the average person on the street knows that publicly calling out lies will likely result in consequences and keeps their head down.
Every authoritarian regime does this.

What’s the old saying - you can fool all the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but never all the people all of the time.
Guess if that some is big enough, the other two clauses can be completely ignored.

A lot of what’s happening is probably inevitable, our systems are worn down, it’s a decadent time. But like the Rapture folks, and there’s plenty of those ■■■■■ in their ranks, this admin is trying to hurry the collapse along. Time to stock up on beans and 3d printer materials

NATO/US were not asked for troops.
Zelensky has said all along that he just wants arms/munitions/money and that the Ukrainian people will do the fighting.
