US politics - the new orange wave (Part 7)

Hey @Lawry

Do you believe in the principle of “Freedom of Navigation”

Yes details are important. Initially Zelensky did want troops.

Zelensky also asked for Europe, NATO and the US to establish a no fly zone using European and US pilots and planes.

Zelensky also asked for accelerated membership to the EU immediately in February 2022 - there is a mutual defence treaty amongst EU members. If granted, the EU would have been obliged to defend Ukraine directly by all means in their power including troops.

To say Zelenskyy didn’t want troops or ask for troops or the Ukrainian people would not have welcomed troops to fight Russia is completely and utterly ridiculous. Of course they would have.

Zelenskyy even went as far as asking volunteers from around the world to join a foreign legion.

Ukraine needed and wanted foreign troops to help it against an invading Russian army.

The EU and US could have stood up to Putin in a much stronger way and they didn’t.

You’re at it again Pretzel…twisting the truth to suit your false narrative.

The original reference you made was clearly about the countries of Europe not sending troops.

And now you’re trying to make out that it was really about individual Europeans.

It must be so hard trying to remember all the different versions of events you come up with.

Mate seriously. Ukraine asked to join the EU immediately knowing EU would be obliged to send troops. You realise Ukraine asking pilots to create a no fly zone involved foreign pilots and foreign planes - and that pilots are armed services personnel.

Jesus Christ

The point you completely missed is that the US and Europe could have done a lot more to deter Putin. They didn’t. They were weak and Putin marched right into Ukraine.

Not sure this is correct @swoodley, Zelensky and West are smart enough to know what they can do before the crazy piece of ■■■■ does something even more stupid. Now that the US has flipped, Zelensky is upping his talk of European military, essentially wanting support in Ukraine. This is being shut down quickly by most in Europe. The whole situation is F&*ked.

Show me an article referencing Zelensky asking for foreign troops.

I read something on BBC the other day. He can see that the US is screwing him. He needs Europe to grow a set. Easier said than done.

there are articles recently.

Yea, fair point. The landscape is shifting so quickly, due to Trump.

The “Special Military Operation” has been going on for three years now.

If Zelensky has recently started talking about troops from other nations, then it is a major change to his long standing position of not asking for such troops.

If you think I’m wrong, then please show me some evidence to support such a position.

The training of Ukraine troops to use NATO weaponry was hampered by the need to train them outside Ukraine. The trainers were not versed in the way combat had to be conducted in the various Ukraine terrains.
As it was , the US contribution to training was minimal and virtually cost free.

You might be right. Its the way I interpreted his latest comments.
BBC

"Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has called for the creation of an “army of Europe” amid rising concern the US may no longer come to the continent’s aid.

To me this is a shift. Again, the landscape has changed. TBH, not sure why I called your comment out originally (apologies), think you are right, it must have been due to me reading the article so I thought i’d mention it, I’ll move on.

Macron also mentioned potentially sending European troops to Ukraine in February last year - he didn’t rule it out.

So you’ve got nothing to show that Zelensky asked for troops from other nations.

What a surprise.

All cool mate…there’s no need to apologise…unlike others on here, you came back and admitted that you might have got it wrong.

That’s pretty cool for this thread.

Good on him, just don’t do it too often or it might start a trend and Blitz would cease to be fun.

Macron floats a lot of ideas, tests support then drops proposals. France is struggling to get adequate numbers in its own military and also has to be ready to send military to its own overseas Departments and Territories ( natural disaster and political unrest).
As it is, France has made a decent contribution through its airforce in deterrence and surveillance.
( And, unlike Trump, Macron does not have exclusive Presidential power in foreign affairs)

Zelenskyy did not immediately ask for military intervention from European nations. Ukraine opened up the invitation for foreigners to come fight in the Foreign legion.
