VFL Signings - Season 2024

It’s quite remarkable that you can be playing in the second tier comp in the AFL with a view to getting back to the seniors (with the equivalent commitment required) and be making the equivalent of someone doing 2 shifts a week at Coles.

Post also belongs in the “AFL - no idea” thread.

After the recent good news, maybe an update from the Cous would be good

Cootee and Fitz are really the only two I wanted to see stay. Fitz has left, so we could be back at square one in terms of building a team/culture.

Big Jorgenson at FF was handy too. The rest dont concern me. Just overhaul it.

In Rosa we trust

Give Jorgenson a spot on the rookie list

O’Neill and Hately would take midfield time from Cootee which is why I feel he would want to leave and no offence to Cootee but both those players are better players and are a more fitting need to the list. I do rate Cootee’s leadership as a young player aswell but being given the captaincy said more about the VFL list and how lacking it was in mature players and leadership in general

I always thought Cootee would find his home as a rebounding HBF, would be pretty disappointed to see him go

Would be pretty glaring to lose another captain a year after Atley bailed.

Having lunch with a Norwood official and he said that we have pretty much signed Cootee. Just going over the finer points ie job, home etc

Yes a few more to follow i hear too sadly

Do we know why?
This seems to be the case every year lately.
Can’t seem to keep anyone decent for more than a year or two.

probably cause the VFL has been a basketcase since DJ stopped coaching and the administration has repeatedly refused to treat it with the respect it deserves

Would be interesting to know what opportunities outside of footy or financial rewards that our club gets compared to other clubs. Maybe other clubs are offering more or something?
Someone like Cootee for instance would have been on $200-400 a game which is the same as he will get a Norwood but he will most likely get free rent, a car and job and if he has family they will be looked after too. I don’t know what type of networks we have to keep these players in the VFL. Perhaps we are doing that as good as others and it’s just a simple case of the club being a rabble

Id hope it wpuld be more thsn that. I got that as a fringe player in the div 1 efl back in 2006.

As skipper he might be on more but Salary Cap is $200k so the top VFL earners might get $1200 a game but you can understand why plenty head to amateur and country leagues where they can get that or more and only have to train once a week

Is it isolated to us? Or is this just how the VFL is?

I trust the footy dept are busily working in background to build a decent team over the next 8-10 weeks as fallout from draft, rookie drafts sort themselves out. The free agents will bolster the depth of list too. Hopefully better injury management ensures better availability (:pray::pray:).
