Welcome to Essendon, Zachary Merrett

Hams is the young absolute inside mid.

I'm not sure why it's really *that* much of an issue, given we've been trying to jam Howlett onto a forward flank & Myers into a tagging/sweeping role for a few years and neither have really worked. In 3 years, when Watson drops off, both will be 27 ish. Melks will be 25, Heppell 24 - just hitting their straps, which gives us 2-3 years to find the 2015 equivalent of guys who are playing the Myers/Howlett/Melksham (2nd tier) inside mid roles.
May well be Kav, Zaha, Browne, Hams etc - might not be.
Sure, we could do with another young Watson coming through
Like every club, ever.
I just don't see the impending catastrophe.
If this club does anything well at all, it's finding/developing nuts'n'bolts types.
Unfortunately we don't have any early picks. When we get a first round pick again, we can target that player. Taylor could have been that guy, but it isn't like we are in trouble or need for the next Watson. Heppell is only in his 4th year next season, I think we can wait a bit.
We may be in a position where we can get a high pick with Ryder or Bellchambers DEPENDING on how quickly Daniher improves. The Pies ended up with 2 top 10 picks

Thank Christ you're not our list manager

The draft seems to draw the ■■■■■■■ out of people.

Their will be a point where we have 3 ruckmen sized players good enough to play, but it is likely they won't be able to play together. Collingwoods protectiveness in this regard will help them, the same thing with Hawthorn.

Some advice, maybe just post why you think my thoughts are so horrible rather than being an ■■■.

I have a feeling both Z.Merrett and E.Kavanagh will form a very classy looking midfield unit soon enough.

You've whinged and moaned ever since our picks were called out, now you're trading away one of our only 2 ruckmen despite the fact one is contracted for 2 more years and the other is 3.
Why don't you support the club and wait for a couple of years before judging this draft or tell us why you are so confident that you know more than our recruiters?

Concur. Add in Will.I. Ham, Ashby, maybe Browne etc and we have lots to smile about here.
Now, let's look to the forward line.

Happy to grab him. Hopefully we have a forward line in the future.

Merrett/Daniher/Merrett

Emma had him at 15 as best available there in her draft.

Pretty good grab based that, the time we took to pick him made you think we were changing our pick, as we really didn’t believe he would be there.

I know lobb was being strongly considered.

I reckion the footy gods were smiling upon us.  Lucky to get him.  Go Zac and Orazio.  Go Zio.

Free agency will see a lot of players get moved on ahead of their contracts ending. Top players with 1 year to go will be offered extensions or potentially traded. No point risking having them walk for nothing during FA (compensation will go). This is something we will need to get used to.
If a player won't sign a 3 year extension when they have 1 year to go then FA becomes a real risk.
Assuming we finish top 4 the next two years then our only chance of picking up a 'guaranteed' gun is to trade.
Couldn't agree more on waiting a few years to judge though. Most drafted yesterday won't play more than a game or two at senior level next year. We might have done well might have made a mess. Time will tell.

Zac’s selection is going to be great motivation for Jackson, who won’t want to be upstaged by his little brother.

Because two of them are 2 of our best (only) 3 big forwards , and the other one's our best ruckman?
Ie they're all required in our best side.
Let alone backups, developing guys, ie what you want on a list in total.
We do not have enough talls. Let's just not go mental about trading them out just yet?

Mr. Myers, Mr. Chappy, meet Zach, he will be camping beyond the fifty arc with you. He wishes also to become a Unit. As you were.

Happy to grab him. Hopefully we have a forward line in the future.

Merrett/Daniher/Merrett

I already clicked that I like this,

But I like this.

Foot skills, decision making, pace, ability to accumulate possession. That seems to tick a few boxes for a mid, with only endurance the glaring weakness, which can be worked on over a few preseasons. Seems like a pretty good result from 26.

Hope zac gets a few games next year, but it will be tough competition with the other young mids/fwds. Need a big preseason.

Geez…

I don’t know about the rest of you guys but I am so excited about our list at the moment.

Over the off-season we have really added some speed and class all over the ground with Aylett, Edwards, Z.Merrett and Fantasia.

But the best part is none of them are even sure to get a game next season! That is how good our 22 is and how deep.

All these exciting new players and they aren’t even guarenteed senior football.

Really loving what EFC are doing and building towards at the moment. I haven’t been this excited about what we are doing currently, for a long time.

This isn’t even to mention the new facilities and Fujitsu sponsorship.

I am sorry. Chapman is too old and injury prone, why didn't we take Dumont? etc.
Better?

■■■■■■ vanilla qick ball magnet with skills. Zach's brother reckons he sets too high standards for himself and pressures him self to improve too quickly. VANILLA! How are we gonna get valu from a second round pick if we don't gamblr on a one way worker with discipline issues. Gutless vanilla!
