2. Do people not get that this is not counted in our regular list? He doesn't take a spot. Other than a wage, he's free. Well done Jim Raynor for having the balls to contact DUDoro*, and well done (again) to DUDoro* for doing such a great job this year.
Judging by his tweeters, He is chums with Blicavs (also a former athlete turned AFL powerhouse), who I'm sure you'll agree has been a success story for the cats. Not harm whatsoever in seeing if this boy can do the same for us. Obviously has the tools. GET AROUND HIM
Wow. It only seems like it was yesterday that we'd were discussing drafting Rayner late in the Nd, because HM or foj1 or someone liked him, and today he's an alternative talent. Where had that time gone!
Wasn't me. 2009 was when I'd only just started watching the juniors, and I didn't see the Jets (or this guy) play at all. Could have been ant555 or foj or mojo311 (remember that guy?) maybe.
Good move by the club though. Athlete who's already proven he can play the game at a high level, so it's not like you're trying to completely reeducate some rugby player or something.
I realised that was probably the case the moment I hit submit! I am about 80% sure it was foj1 who had him going to us late in his phantom draft. Pretty sure it was Rayner's bottom age year, and he thought he might develop nicely. Might look for the details later.

A bit of reality would be welcome. That's just rubbish.

C'mon 'boot, Exaggeration is the highest form of wit!
Fark. No wonder he hasn't played footy for 5 years.
Suspect if it doesn't work out in 2014 he'll be looking to knock a couple of seconds off in the hope of getting to Rio...

Inspired pick, I think the Dalgleish experiment has opened a few eyes. Guys with athletic talent just need time to learn the game and get their skills up. By picking up someone with exceptional athletic ability we can create a footballer out of nowhere.

Love the move!
Give him time watch out for 2015-16!
Did you miss the whole bit about him being in the TAC Cup team of the year?

No, Dalgleish was the same, athlete first footballer second.
They have the basics of footy but not Quite AFL recruit standard. As a rookie we only have to fix the footy bit.
We should have one of these guys on our rookie last every year.

Close, but not quite. Perhaps he said he liked him, but in the phantom draft I could find (2008) he had him going to Sydney
Sydney Pick 62 Johnny Rayner
Bottom aged midfielder who only played 5 or so TAC cup games because of a back injury. Rayner is an elite runner who has represented his state in 800m and 1500m. Rayner has an impressive work rate, has decent kicking skills and is clean below his knees. I think this kid could really develop into a better than average AFL midfielder

Tough ask. Even without a break many of us get to that pace but can not take next step to 1:45/44. He is gonna be faster but not fitter than Blicavs.
From a football point of view he as really good 400m speed......Im a 1.47.7 800m guy but only run 49.mid for a 400m. He goes 47. Blicavs would be a 50.xx guy. Not many AFL guys will be able to touch him over any 80m runs.
We need picks like this with our current situation. Only costs you a rookie list spot. We don't really lose in this situation.
Edit: re 400m speed...If you think dempsey provides pace from halfback this guy could provide twice that.
People are complaining that we picked this guy, yet only few knew that we even had this option. Personally, I would have gone after a WWE fighter, but thems the breaks!
I was thinking the Bogut would look good at CHF in place of Davey.
Why don't we ever take a risk?
Probably because we can't afford the 20 mil a season price tag he comes with.
Welcome aboard John. My only knock on the Club about this is why we haven’t been doing more of this type of thing. I realise this rookie B thing only came in a few years ago but why haven’t we been doing something like paying somebody like Darren Bennett 50K a year to spot and put a bit of ground work into some kids from the USA. It’s as if we had our crack at expanding our horizons, got Michael Quinn, and have been scared of doing anything since.
