Ye Olde VFL MegaThread — August 2013 to December 2015

NO’B had some brilliant daisy cutters to leads today; sure there wasn’t as much pressure as usual, but it was nice to see some damage from the many touches.
What's he like defensively?

Where exactly on the afl live site do you get the vfl stats

Thanks

Next best (for either team) is McKernan on 120; that’s 28 disposals, 18 hit-outs, two goals

That’s more than Bellchambers combined stats this year.

I like it in here. It’s safe, it’s cosy:

Dear Mother, dear Mother, the AFL threads are cold,
But the VFL threads are healthy & pleasant & warm;
Besides I can tell where I am use’d well,
Such usage in heaven will never do well.

But if in the AFL threads they would give us some Ale.
And a pleasant fire, our souls to regale;
We’d sing and we’d pray, all the live-long day;
Nor ever once wish from the AFL threads to stray,

Then the Parson might preach & drink & sing.
And we’d be as happy as birds in the spring:
And modest dame Lurch, who is always posting in the AFL threads,
Would not have bandy children nor fasting nor birch.

And God like a father rejoicing to see,
His children as pleasant and happy as he:
Would have no more quarrel with the Devil or the Barrel
But kiss him & give him both drink and apparel.

Went to the game and sat right behind the interchange, which is not my normal view. So between that, not knowing the players initially, and not knowing the normal level of the VFL, I’m not going to try and pretend I can give a good summary of players full games, or our overall performance (other than of course we flogged them). But some thoughts we had:

Edwards: Played forward for most of the game and was consistently damaging. As has been mentioned tried a bit too much sometimes, but was otherwise fantastic. I would definitely consider for the seniors.
Tippa: Amazingly clean with the football. It looked like it just had to be within reach and he snapped it up and had full control of it. Only seem skills like that a few times before. Seemed to have a decent tank. I watched him in some one-on-one aerial duels - and he DID get beaten. Was better when he was a little off and could jump. But I don’t think his future is the HBF. But I would definitely consider him for a rookie/late pick and play wing.
NOB: I was really impressed. Seemed to link up, use the ball well, and got in the packs. Why hasn’t he at least been given a shot.
Laverde/Langford: Showed some classy stuff, wouldn’t promote quite yet.
McKenna: A lot to like.
Giles/McKernan: showed the value of the resting ruck, and both did some good stuff around the ground.
Stein was incredibly solid, but also gave a safe option to deliver. Can’t remember a miskick.
Ashby: I rate some of the AFL football he’s played, but he made some shocking mistakes. Gave up a goal, destroyed momentum a few times with his disposal/decisions.

One thing I didn’t like - do we work hard enough on running/overlap? A number of times fast players (e.g. Dalgiesh, Tippa) would kick to someone on the wing, and then stop. Why not keep running, burn off your man as they could, and give the guy further up an overlap option? Stanton is so good at this you would think they would try and emulate him.

If you’re a person who wants Ambrose out… swapping Jobe and NO’B between medium forward and on-ball might make sense.

Was all around the ground racking up disposals and involved in switching the ball quite a lot from half back and hitting targets in our forward 50. Everyone knows I’m a bit biased when it comes to NOB, but based on his efforts in the reserves this year, he surely has to get some opportunities in the seniors.

Its been that way for me for a long time.

I’d definitely take Edwards to Subiaco. Maybe Laverde and/or The Langford too. Jerrett as non playing emergency is in a tough spot.

But we need more run. Lots of it. Pick the side for the conditions.

Episode 4, the VFL thread. A new hope.

If the VFL team does well then chances are the senior team will get thrashed.

O’Brien- 37 touches.

Bring him back?

Yep, probably Edwards, Laverde and NOB for me.

Not sure having two first year players on top of our current youth crop in is good.

I’d take Chappy as an emergency and then tell him to one on one coach one of the new players and see if he can coach a bit too.

He totally deserves it, it ridiculous to hold him back the way he has been playing, I don’t care what minor aspect on his game he needs to “work on” he is a young kid who is having a red hot crack, get him in.

Sorry, NO’B too slow for Subiaco? Depends on other changes, I guess.

How slow is NO’B? Who is the best comparison in the 1’s?

jobe, injured.

Jesus I’m not looking forward to WADA Strikes Back

NO’B has endurance (see pre-season hype) and maybe I’m being a little harsh given Watson will presumably still be out, and Chappy may not play. Stanton demonstrates that while you may get exploited on pure pace you can still do damage and create links if you just run run run.

He’s done more than KAV this year.
